Ah I didn't realise sorry! I will get that then if it is TR4 specific I cannot wait to make this upgrade from my current PC!

I have a 2950x@PBO at 4.3-4.4GHz max boost in some cores with a Noctua NH-U14S  TR4 SP3 and it cools fine at max 68ºC (PBO limited), but when OCed mannualy @all cores to 4.2GHz temps go to hell itself, above 80ºC...
You have some options for the 3970X:

    1) Use PBO and be happy with the Noctua
    2) Best AIO (full coverage) go to Enermax Liqtech II 360mm Rad, but it doesn't appears to be a long lasting AIO, since there are a lot of complaints for the first rev.
    3) For manual OC go custom WC and yet I think it will be a little hot (85ºC in some reviews like in derbauer test bench).

The "no games support it" argument that is instantly given in almost every thread is a little bit of an exaggeration.  I mean ya if you are considering support 100% scaling, then yes no games support it.  Most people are expecting to get less than that.  The better response is "you aren't going to get your moneys worth", which will always be true.

I used NV link on 2080's and basically got anywhere from what I would consider minimal scaling (20-30%) to almost true scaling (80%+).  On witcher 3 and shadow of the tomb raider I was seeing basically full scaling and getting the full 165 fps at times.  Anthem was scaling about 20%, so definitely was getting an increase, but not super worth it.

Most importantly, it still has the occasional glitchyness of SLI.  Flickering, weird out of place lighting/flashing, and stuttering.  Not so much that the games weren't playable, in fact most of the time the high frame rates made it quite nice, but sometimes the glitchyness just ruined a scene and took me out of the experience.

Right now to run at 4k at high rates, or to get 144-165hz at 1440p (on ultra settings of course) the only real option is NV link or wait for the next gen of cards hoping the flagship is capable (god I hope so, kind of ridiculous that there isn't one now).  A single 2080ti will get you approaching 144hz on a lot of games, but not on the big AAA titles.  But it still does a a pretty darn good job (100+ typically).  2-2080tis is going to cost you a fortune, and run REAL hot if you aren't liquid cooling everything.

Yeah, I have an 1800x.  I haven't updated Windows since March 4th. So I decided to test this.

I had to tweak the settings to not get a GPU bottleneck (waiting for 1080ti), but here's what I got.  I had MSI Afterburner opened and noticed no difference on which random single core would ping in the high 90% mark, odd or even it didn't matter.

All cores were used. SMT wasn't ignored.

I had SLI several times, it works fine for benchs, especially 3DMark,...for games, that's another history in these days.

My last one was 2xTxp, sold already one of them...I would recommend to avoid SLI and get a better single card solution like the 1080Ti.

Reading into it, 1.45-1.55 is a stable number for Ryzen, just a little beyond what I'd like to push in terms of longevity.

It'd basically be going from a 5820K to an overclocked 5960X, so your mileage would vary depending on how much use you'd get out of the 1800X.
