My friend can't get a phone because his parents say that phones are too expensive. The parents aren't willing to buy anything that isn't an iPhone.

I was at my stepdad's house one time, and he was at work. I wanted to connect to his Wifi so I called him to ask his password, and he said he didn't know and he needed to call the guy who set up his network (the fact that he paid someone to set up a wifi device should clue you in on how tech savvy he is). Then my step dad called back and said, in a voice that sounded like he was reading from notes, "Okay. He says that the password is located...on a file...on the desktop. I don't know if that means anything to you."

Then I go to his computer and see that the password is in a Word document on his desktop.

I just saw a really sketchy ad from Vodafone. It said: "If you get a family tarif with unlimited calls and data for 100 dollars a month, you will receive a Wi-Fi network for free" and under it was, in small letters, written: "In order to receive free Wi-Fi network, you have to buy our Huawei modem."

Person 1: "I am going to store my games on the RAM because it is so fast!"
Person 2: "But RAM needs power to keep data, you can't do that"
Person 1: "I am just going to dedicate the RAM for storage, so I can turn off my computer"
    Person 2: "Okay" *Confused face*

Overheard this while in a class. Wanted to intervene so bad, but I would have to talk louder for them to hear me, and that would probably disrupt the class.
Person 2 was converted to the stupid side, and believed person 1.

my girlfriend refers to storage on a phone as data. like she says im running out of data on my phone she said to me once. my response was "well just be light on it for the rest of the month there are only a few days till the next month" being as tech illeterate as she is, she said okay and things where fine. then a week later when her billing period refreshed she asked me why it wasnt fixed yet. i told her to contact her provider is must be a mistake on their end or something im not entirely sure i can do anything for you. of course after contacting the provider they assured her her data was renewed and that nothing was wrong. so the next morning she says that her data was renewed but her phone still doesnt show it. i finnaly told her to give me her phone so i can look at it. turns out data meant the god damned storage! i had to explain to her what data means in terms of smart phones, then i had to explain that she had too much shit on the phone. of course she never deleted anything and to this day still refers to storage as data. i dont even know why anymore but i just get really irritated whenever she says data. just the word sets me off.

so its safe to say i offically have a trigger. i can now use the excuse "YOUR TRIGGERING ME!!!!!"

At my job we use the office computer a lot and people literally open a whole new browser when they want to go on a different page. Holy shit just open a new tab, we don't need the same browser opened 20 times.

One time while I was being trained I was moving my mouse around in a circle while something was loading and my co-worker freaked out on me and told me to stop because I might "mess something up" and slow down the computer

Today my sister came into my room to hang out with me for a bit while I was re-assembling my PC (took it apart to fit it to a case I am custom buidling). She was pointing at the graphics card trying to find the right word for a few seconds.... she ended up with screeninator

I've got a story which isn't related to computers in anyway but its funny anyway. So I was working in B&Q (A retail hardware store in the UK) when this fairly young man comes up to the front desk complaining that the socket we had sold him was defective. I asked him what was wrong with it and he replied "There's no power coming out of it", slightly confused I asked him if he had connected all the wires up correctly to which he replied "You have to connect wires up to it??", So it turns out he had bought this socket, taken it home, mounted it on the wall where he wanted it, expecting power to come out of it without connecting any wires to the socket.

I have absolutely no idea how that man has made it this far in life, anyway i politely inform him that in order to get power out of this socket it must be connected to the mains and that was the end of that.

I don't know if there's a post limit here or whatever, but this is another story I wanted to share.
Guy came in with a custom built desktop that wouldn't even power on. His two teenage kids were with him and we were all making smalltalk while diagnosing the problem. Did the usual. Firstly checked to make sure the case front panel was properly plugged into the board. No errors there. Maybe it's the PSU? Nope, that's good. Maybe the video card is causing a problem? Nope, still won't power on even with the GPU out.
Hmmm...at this point I'm beginning to think they just forgot to install the risers and destroyed the motherboard. To my surprise, nope. Those were in too. I couldn't figure this out. So decided to do a bench test. Took everything out and just hooked up the bare necessities. Still nothing.
At this point I don't know what else to check...I mean, it can't be the CPU, can it? Surely the CPU isn't bad, in all my time I've only seen a bad CPU once.
Went to pop out the CPU...and I saw something disturbing. The CPU itself was bent. Yes. Bent. There was a huge dent right down the die lid, like someone took it and tried to snap it in half. What the hell? I took the CPU out and the mating pins on the socket were all bent out of shape, well beyond simply bending them back.
About a week later he came back with replacement parts, and I installed it all for him and set everything up. Thank goodness. I never got to talk to the supposed "computer expert" son (he wasn't in the store the first time), but if I ever do meet him I think I'm gonna punch him.

This isn't really a tech story, but it looks like this is pretty common among people.
Last year I was with my family on an educational track in the woods and there were signs with info about animals that live there. One of them was about an eagle. It stated that eagle have much more advanced eyes compared to human, that humans can only see 24FPS, but eagles can see up to 120FPS.
How can an educational track for milions of euros say this?

My teacher today while talking about piracy (translated into English):

" Every computer has what's known as a IP and people everywhere can access anything in your IP. "

    First: it's a IP ADDRESS.
Second: Only the router contains that IP, not the computer. Two computers with the same network have the same IP, and computers with no network connected have no IP.
Third: That last statement is wrong.

I can't remember where I saw it but I definitely remember a post somewhere about someone who bought all his computer parts and when he wanted to install his graphics card, it didn't fit, like they must have been different PCI type slots, anyway, he thought you could just cut off whatever part of the graphics card connector didn't fit, so off he goes, cutting away with some scissors at the motherboard connection and wondering why it didn't work

    #haha I had a friend like this.........
One day he came to visit our house and I had my computer on....I run Windows 10 professional. He was talking to me and suddenly he noticed that my pc has a OS that he is not familiar with.....so he asked me about what OS was I running....I replied "Bro It's Windows 10...latest and greatest".
He felt little bit of insulted because he used to think that he is aware of everything related to tech...(-_- which he definitely was not)
Then to cover it up he told me that he knew a friend who used all the Windows versions including Windows 7.8.[9] and 10...:o
I was quite a speechless back that time and I was barely holding my #LOL

I work in IT for a pretty large company and I have experience with non-techies almost everyday lol

One of my favorite experiences that I've had lately is a user reported that her mouse wasn't working. I first replied to the email and after no response I decided to call the employee. I asked her a few questions about it and she said the activity light was no longer flashing. I asked her to replace her batteries and she said she has already tried that, I grab a new set along with some extra batteries just in case the batteries she was using were also bad. When I get down to the 6th floor the first thing I do is check the batteries, when I removed the cover I noticed the batteries were in the wrong way, negative to positive.  I really don't see how you can make this mistake since their are small pictures of batteries in each slot showing you which direction they need to face, I played it off cool so she didn't notice her mistake.

I've got a ton of different stories and experiences I've had but this is one of my top experiences from this month.

She replied that it looked dirty and tried pouring some water form the sink on to the phone. while im just standing there wondering how it's even possible to be so stupid

I once spent like 30 minutes trying to explain to my grandma the difference between a computer and a monitor. She thought that the "white box" was the hard drive, and that it stored all of the data and that the "screen" (monitor) did the rest. She still, TO THIS DAY, calls the PC the hard drive and the monitor the computer.

Also, one time a friend wouldn't stop bothering me about how his WIFI stopped working on his laptop, so I finally caved and said I'd take a look at it. I opened the laptop to see that the guy had pressed the WIFI disable (toggle) button is his keyboard, and that's why it wouldn't work.

Alot of these incidents are comparable to my other sister. She won a laptop in a draw - really nice asus one, can't rememeber the exact specs but I know it would've been ~$1000 new. anyway, laptop is only about 2 years old and it is like almost destroyed. mousepad doesn't work, there is tape on the screen, and she complains about it lagging when she goes downloading random stuff without ever doing virus scans or anything.

My mom knows nothing about computers, but loves to play games.

Her laptop is an Asus from 2013 with a Core-i3 and integrated graphics.  Usually she plays those WildTangent games, but as a huge fan, she wants to play The Walking Dead.
The Walking Dead obviously has bigger system requirements than the WildTangent games.

She can't seem to understand this.
