you could buy coolers like Arctic Accelero Mono Plus, but for sgnificantly more than just zip tie a fan or two so full jank seems to be the way. At least that's what I would do.

I personally only use/need/want my two 1080p 1ms monitors. Im super happy at 1080p right now. I suppose I'll just combine it with my small amount of tax refund this year which I JUST remembered is a thing.

    Umm.

No.  200$ for a 15 fps upgrade is nonsense.

Why would you even consider this?

I think you would need to at least invest around $300...

I was going to upgrade from 390X to 5700 on the basis of the 7nm bandwagon, BUT thermals/noise/size/cost just is not worth it right now. If AMD can pull out a better 7nm GPU in 2020 (either the high-end Navi with decent performance or HOPEFULLY a well performing Navi 2), then its worth the upgrade even for 350$
Going for Intel would be a more bullet-proof approach, but considering you are paying for a lot of "dark silicon" (RT cores) that MAY or MAY NOT get support from game devs and we dont know if they can work as generic compute units to boost performance with a driver/firmware update.

All about them noise/thermals, IMHO. If AMD launches a cool (sic) GPU in 2020...well then I would upgrade. In the meantime, I suggest you keep it upto 1440p and lower the settings. Eat ramen and save up for a 400-500$ GPU

    Keep the R9 390 and save that 200-250 for a CPU/Mobo/RAM upgrade, a R5 1600AF, a B450 board and 16GB 3/3.2GHz ram would cost approx 200-250

    Good day!

The video above is a promo for Slabtop. Slabtop is a project which aims to take standard desktop class hardware and fit it into a portable battery operated enclosure with all of the regular input devices of a laptop.
This early concept was built based on the feedback from a questionnaire posted on /r/pcmasterrace in January asking what people would want if they could have an effective "desktop laptop".
From the questionnaire, it was wittled down to these primary factors:
Had to support full desktop GPUs Price and upgrade friendliness were paramount 15" was the ideal middle ground for an initial design And as a result, the prototype demonstrated in the video above was conceived. Essentially we just want to hear your feedback, what you think of the idea, the form factor and any improvements you think could be made.
This concept was shaped by the community so we want to know what the community thinks of the initial result!

I forgot I posted this, so to everyone curious, the GPU still lives to this day. The cheapo PSU is shot. Turns out it was a manufacturing error and they replaced it for free.

HIDevolution is a system builder and their quality/quality control is top notch. They offer thermal mod upgrades like adding Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut which is one of the best liquid metal thermal interface out there in addition to Fujipoly Extreme Thermal pads to further bring the temps down.

If you want the new RTX GPU, then check out their new laptop line up here: http://www.hidevolution.com/nvidia-rtx-new-release

If you don't mind the previous GTX 10xx GPU lineup which is perfectly capable of running today's games and even future games at least for the next 2-3 years at max or high settings, then I recommend you one of these:

    Custom Built MSI GT75 8RG TITAN-093 17.3" w/ G-Sync nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080

    Custom Built MSI GS73 STEALTH 8RF-014 17.3" 4K w/ nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q

Custom Built ASUS ROG Strix GL703GS-DS74 Scar Edition - 17.3" FHD 144Hz G-Sync w/ nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070

    Custom Built ASUS ROG G703GI-XS71 - 17.3" FHD 144Hz G-Sync w/ nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080

    Custom Built Alienware 17 R4-HID58 (Late 2016) - 3K QHD Tobii - nVIDIA GTX 1080

They are all on discount now since the release of the new RTX GPU Lineup but if you email donald@hidevolution.com before ordering you might be able to get a little bit more discount.

On a side note, I own the MSI GT75 Titan and previously had the MSI GT73VR Titan Pro, what I love about MSI laptops is they have the best cooling solution out of the box and simply "work" out of the box without the need of any fiddling around with the system.

Chances are unknown at this point. I doubt you lost much unless he left it on and pumping power into the system. If it's unplugged and left alone you're more than likely going to be okay.
Also, tell the PSU to stop smoking, straighten up, and get a job.

Nah, he's smart and unplugged it immediately. I'm not worried about anything else but those two components. Everything else is easily replaced.
