andiireyhann reacted to Tech Deals in Is "overcloking for free performance upgrade" still valid ?
You are correct, it is no longer "free" the way it was back in the day.
Of course Intel can get away with it because AMD isn't competitive anymore. Hopefully Zen changes that, but that is now a tall mountain to climb and we've heard the story before. I wish them luck.
This does bring up a good point... if you buy a Z board and a K chip and you don't overclock, then you're overpaying!

It's as in no extra money would be needed. In the older days, *i think* all you need is a better cooler and you're good to go. That's not free but the performance gains you get for your extra $ is worth it. You might even get away with the stock cooler itself.
But nowadays, you need a bunch of extra gimmicks like the Z chipsets and unlocked CPUs, which makes the money cost adds up. In addition to the extra cost of the two, you will have to have a better cooler so you can reach the full potential of your unlocked CPU. Whereas in the old days you can get away OCing with stock cooler and you dont have to spend more to justify the extra money cost of mobo and unlocked cpus and such.

My worst mistake must have been starting to invest into my PC. It is such a big money magnet and I haven't spent money on anything but electronics for the past 4 years.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3036760/hardware/the-impossible-has-happened-radeon-and-geforce-come-together-in-directx-12.html
So it appears DirectX12 is starting to implement multi-GPU support between AMD and Nvidia. It does need to be added to a game for support; Ashes of the Singularity is the flag-bearer for this at the time being. While this article doesn't go into the details of how it works, it looks like it scales and performs better than SLI. I'm interested in how VRAM works; will you be restricted to the smaller amount (think RAID or RAM with varying storage sizes/speeds) or if it combines them. I suppose it really depends on how the game implements it and what is being processed on each card, but the possibilities! And no more SLI bridges! It also doesn't say how many GPU's can be combined, I think the author should have tried two 980's AND the Fury X, but this support is still beta, so there could be updates later. I can only imagine how this would help for the incoming VR wave and heavy titles like Star Citizen.

So, here's my experiences, that I can come to think of now:
- After I've fixed a computer for a friend or relative, they always blame me for every future problem.
- Two guys were talking in an MMORPG I used to play, and one of them said that he overclocked his hard drive and his computer is now more than twice as fast.
- Whenever I tell someone that I like computers and technology, they always assume I just post stuff on Facebook and play Farmville all day long.
- My mom freak out every time an email from someone she doesn't know, slips through the spam filter and end up in her inbox. Something worth mentioning is that she use hotmail, so she freaks out a lot.
