Does he have anything demanding installed? If not, download Heaven or Valley benchmark. If it happens in those, RIP your card. Could be clocks, bad driver install, etc.
 
XFX has great service, I'd just send it back.

If it's an ATX case it'll fit any ATX board of equal size or smaller.

If they're that close in price and you don't mind get the XFX RX480 

Whichever matches the build or is less expensive.

If you can sell your 960 for enough then maybe but I don't think you'll get a whole lot for it.

Electronics are like cars, you instantly lose a huge chunk if it's at all used in most cases. (and it's value already went down)

Maybe just something to do with Far Cry its self? with the black boxes?
But Grid 2 does sound like its the GPU

backlight for one. zalman doesn't have nkey rollover. more compact and backlit. it has cherry mx switches, which are supposedly better, though i don't see much difference, having tried both reds, cheery are a lot smoother, khail in zalman feel a bit sandy? sort of rougher movement, think oiled up bike chain vs. not. 
 
zalmas is pretty much as budget keyboard as it gets, unless you go for the never heard about chinese switch keyboards, it's good, but you get quite a lot more with the ozone.
 
not sure about reliability, again, but it's generally  good with mech boards.
 
i'd pay the extra for ozone, up to you if the nicer switches backlight nkeyrollover and the package is worth it, as i personally highly prefer that borderless design.

Cherry MX or bust. Kalih are cheaper and their life is usually shorter. They are the main reason people dislike the BlackWidow series of keyboards. I'd suggest K70
