  1. IMO endurance is never really an issue for home users. The NAND in a modern SSD typically lasts between 500TB and 2+PB. If you write 100GB/day to your SSD (that's over 10 times as much as most people), it takes over 13 years to hit that 500TB mark where you may need to start worrying. Most people will have upgraded to newer, higher capacity drives by then.
  2. So you need to plug in a device to authenticate? That's going to suck for those Macbook users that only have 1 port. ? Personally I'm just going to wait for SQRL. Until then I'll just remember my passwords.
  3. Probably because they apologized.
  4. Could have gotten it from someone else's old system. I agree with @SkyHound0202, it sounds like there's something else going on. It's probably struggling to get enough (or stable) power to the CPU.
  5. Do they really think this is going to turn out better than all the previous attempts at creating a "light" version?
  6. Depends on where you live and what expenses you have. Plenty of people live comfortably on less than 20k.
  7. No need for a second display. Seeing as the back of the phone is usually flat, you may as well put a chrome decal on it and use that as a mirror for when you really want to take selfies. You can use the volume buttons to take pictures, so no need to touch the touchscreen on the other side of the phone either.
  8. Blender shouldn't be an issue seeing as it has a native Linux version. The people behind Unity3D experimented with a Linux version a couple of years ago. Not sure why they stopped it, probably lack of demand because their entire customer base is on Windows anyway. The others will probably require Wine indeed, or a full-on Windows install (or VM). Not sure if there will be a performance hit and how big it will be, the only way to find out is by trying it yourself on your own hardware. "Assuming it sucks" is not really a proper comparison.
  9. Keep in mind that a password manager is a single point of failure. If anyone ever gets in to yours, they basically have full access to everything. If you use one, at least put 2FA on every account whose password you store in there. I use different passwords for almost all of my accounts (not that I have many of those, I'm a digital minimalist) and I can memorize basically all of them. I do keep a full list of them in an encrypted file on an offline-only machine, just in case I forget one. I guess that machine is also a single point of failure, but then again you'd need physical access and need to brute-force a long and complicated passphrase in order to get access to a file that's basically random symbols to anyone who doesn't know exactly how I designed it.
  10. I sit at 80cm from my 27" screens, and TBH 1080p was very usable. However there is a clear difference with 27" 1440p. Once I tried the latter, I just could not use the 1080p displays without noticing the lower resolution. I upgraded my displays a week or two later, mostly because it took me that long to research all the options.
  11. According to Microsoft it has been unsafe to use Windows 7 for several years now. As soon as Windows 10 was released, Win7 instantly became garbage and people were using it "at their own peril" https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/science-technology/631414/Windows-7-Security-Warning-Microsoft As @PineyCreek pointed out, security updates will be available until January 14th 2020. As soon as that patch is released, any new vulnerabilities will not be patched anymore. I expect that people will be holding on to their exploits in the last couple of months, hoping that MS doesn't accidentally find them. That way they'll be able to use them as soon as MS releases the final patch. My main PC is on Win7 still, I will not be installing Win8.1 or Win10 on it. In 10 months I'm wiping the whole thing and from then on it'll run Linux. My old rig is currently a testing platform for all kinds of stuff. Different Linux distros, different desktop environments, trying native Linux alternatives to the Windows software that I normally use, etc etc. That way I have plenty of time to find out what works best for me and make the transition as smooth as possible. I'd suggest you do the same. If you don't happen to have an older PC laying around, now would be a good time to start playing with virtual machines to get used to your next OS.
  12. Later versions too. Linux Mint 19.1 is available in a 32 bit version, in Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce. I just put the 32 bit Cinnamon version in a VM and a quick check ($ cat /etc/*-release) reveals that it is based on Ubuntu Bionic (18.04). Not sure how they got hold of that version in 32 bit, you can't get it on Ubuntu's own site. https://linuxmint.com/download.php Looks like LMDE3 is available in 32 bit as well.
  13. Xubuntu, Puppy Linux, any lightweight Linux Distro basically. Definitely not Windows.
  14. I change it when I notice that the CPU temps are increasing compared to when I just applied new paste. The Arctic Silver 5 on my main rig has been on there for 3 years now (I built it on Feb 17th 2016 and haven't removed the cooler since) and I'm still getting the exact same temps as the day I built it. On my previous rig the paste lasted for 5 years without any noticeable temperature increase.
  15. Ask for a photo of the setup that the seller was running. If the cards are too close to eachother, I'd avoid it. However if there's at least 2 slots between them (and/or extra fans blowing air onto the cards) you are most likely dealing with someone who knew what he/she was doing. It can also help to ask what voltage the cards were running. Any miner worth their salt will undervolt the cards to reduce temperature and power draw. For an RX 580, mining voltages tend to be somewhere around 0.9V. (a quick search for RX580 mining voltage shows numbers between 0.875 and 0.950V). If the seller doesn't know, that's a bit of a red flag (although not necessarily a dealbreaker).
  16. Oh for f***s sake! As if the whole thing with 87 variants of USB-C wasn't complicated enough already. Screw this, I'm going back to USB 2.0.
  17. TBH a couple of months in jail would probably be a good thing for him. He really needs to take a break, dude is overworked as hell.
  18. Funnily enough, scientific proof that global warming is man-made has just reached the scientific "golden standard". This means there's a 1 in a million chance that global warming isn't man-made. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-climatechange-temperatures-idUSKCN1QE1ZU Sure, there have been colder and hotter periods in the past 5-ish billion years, but the temperatures never went up as fast as the do nowadays (and by that I mean in the last century).
  19. That was a deliberate choice, not a compatibility issue. MS did that just to stop people from installing Win7 on new machines, not because Win7 "doesn't work" with modern CPUs. https://www.howtogeek.com/311743/how-and-why-microsoft-blocks-windows-7-updates-on-new-pcs/ Zeffy's patch stops that processor check and your Ryzen or kaby system will get the latest updates just fine. The big issue now is that manufacturers stopped developing Win7 drivers for modern chipsets because of how hard MS is making it for users to run Win7.
  21. VRT, the national TV network here in Belgium, did a 3-part documentary about Facebook. They did touch on the moderation subject, and there were ex-moderators that (anonymously due to NDA) told the reporters very similar stories. I'd link the whole thing, but it's almost completely in Dutch without English subtitles. Actually ... I'll put it in the Dutch talk topic, for those in the Netherlands who want to watch it anyway.
  22. How old is your PSU? I have seen several PSUs become unstable as they got older (2-3 years). Once the voltages start to fluctuate too much, you can reach moments where the PSU just doesn't deliver enough for the PC to continue functioning. When that happens, the whole thing will abruptly turn off. If you have access to another PSU, try plugging that one into your system and see if that stops the problem. No need to completely put it in the case and cable manage it, just put it next to the case and connect the CPU power, 24-pin, the drives (or at least the boot drive) and the GPU.
