I don't swap phones often and so I want as future proof a phone as I can get. My current phone is approaching 4 years now.

I actually meant 32gb, but yes the 16 only has 2gb which is the only model available here. The reason I want the 32gb over the 16gb is for the 3gb of ram.

Get a G3 and then spend the next year comparing it to your dad's phone and drive him crazy telling him how much better the G3 is and why.

It is possible to use the Gear 2 with other Kit Kat devices, but some functionality doesn't work. Also the Gear Live is powered by Android Wear and so I believe it can be used with any android device. But honestly I think the 360 or the Pebble Steel but I'd prefer the color screens.

Yeah, there's always downsides. If you were on HTC before I'd just stick with it. The M8 is a great device. I wish the screen were bigger and body smaller with a better camera but I guess you can't have it all.
If you want a device asap I'd go M8. I wouldn't buy a G3 till there are some reviews out regarding battery life, since it has that 1440p screen.

Apparently the OS for the OnePlus phone can be pretty buggy.

Nexus 5 if you need a device that's cheap. It's at best average in all categories.

The Samsung S5 is all right, but I hate Touchwiz, am not a fan of the increased size over the S4, etc. It gets bonus marks if you need to carry around massive amounts of media, as it has a microSD card slot.
If you drop your phone in water or toilets a lot then it might be worth considering seeing as it's water resistant.

The HTC is awesome if you don't need a decent camera. It's camera is garbage. Other than that, it's an awesome device. Great speakers, microSD, nice feel in the hand. It'd be a stellar phone if they ditched the ultrapixel camera.
At the end of the day, you've still only got 4mp to play with.

The LG G2 is what I'd go for out of the three, especially since you can generally find it for free on contract/upgrade or pretty cheap on the used market. I've often seen them for around $350 brand new, in the box.
It gets better battery life than the Samsung, and honestly is very comparable performance wise. It's smaller, with a larger IPS screen.

    Basically this:

Cheap + good camera and best battery life - G2
    Cheap + stock Android - Nexus 5
    Waterproof + photos + media whore - Samsung S5
Media consumption + media whore - HTC M8

I'm looking at new phones right now as well. Honestly the G2 is leading, only because I want a decent camera. Otherwise I'd probably go HTC M8 and just buy a decent point and shoot.
Have you looked at the G3 at all? It comes out in 6 days. Should best the Samsung S5 by a fair margin.

I think he wants a phone he can actually buy
