GTX 580 Cooling

Hi all, was wondering if anyone had any experience modding the reference Nvidia cooling used on the 500 series cards. 

 

I have a GTX 580 and would love to cool it down a little, it's not failed or even given me any trouble but you know what it's like.

 

I just have the urge to get the temps down and mod something.  I don't care how diy or "ghetto" it is.  The more weird and strange the better.

Oh and please don't tell me to buy another card or an aftermarket cooler as I am skint but I do have a load of old components and crap laying around.

How on earth do you think you are going to mod a cooler to get better performance?

 

You could paint it to look better, or change your thermal paste and shave a few degrees off?

yea, thermal paste would be good option. also case fans.

Changed the paste for MX-4 and it's inside a HAF912 with an extra fan for it and the southbridge.

 

I know this is a daft idea but I was just wondering.

I think I have the answer you're looking for. I had a Corsair H50 lying around and I strapped it to my GTX 580 for a ghetto attempt at liquid cooling. I did this back in March, so I know its stable long term. It idles at 28C, and playing BF4 on the highest settings it maxes out around 50C.
