Apple reportedly acquires the company behind Microsoft’s Kinect sensor

Youbetternot

What is apple trying to do now? Hiring a company that made the kinect, what they want to collect information from their customers too? Another reason is that we know that apple is planning to make a appleTV, will they try to bundle a kinect type thing with it to watch people? Introduction the iwatcher, it watches you every sec.

Apple has reportedly acquired PrimeSense, an Israeli fabless semiconductor company, for $345 million. Israeli newspaper Calcalist claims Apple has finalized the acquisition, with plans for an announcement within the next two weeks. Primesense worked with Microsoft to include its technology, chips, and designs inside the first Kinect sensor for the Xbox 360, but Microsoft opted to build its latest Xbox One Kinect sensor without Primesense’s help. Microsoft’s changes led Primesense to focus on retail, robotics, and healthcare industries, alongside gaming and living room tech.

Rumors of a PrimeSense acquisition by Apple originated from the same Israeli newspaper, Calcalist, earlier this year. At the time, Apple was said to have offered $280 million to buy the 3D sensor specialist. If the acquisition reports are accurate, then this would be the second time Apple has purchased an Israeli component maker. In January 2012, the company revealed it had acquired flash storage company Anobit in a $400 million deal.

A KINECT-LIKE CAMERA FOR AN APPLE TV?

It’s obvious why Apple might be attracted to such a company. Primesense's 3D-scanning technology is used in more than 20 million devices worldwide, including sensors that can be embedded in smartphones and tablets. With persistent rumors of an Apple TV on the horizon, and recent reports suggesting it’s now planned for 2015, it’s possible that a PrimeSense acquisition may play some part in any Apple living room push or future tablet and smartphone devices

My exact guess is the Apple ring for the Apple TV was a bad idea so now a camera implementation will be made.

Wow what an incredibly negative attitude you have. Have it occurred to you that they may be trying to push innovation and not put you under constant surveillance?

One senses sarcasm

Hence the title. I'm an Apple user, not a fanboy, and I'm tired of the ridiculous amount of uncalled for flak Apple is always receiving. I wish people would educate themselves before spreading hate like this and give them a standing chance because lord knows they deserve it. They are no more evil than every other big company on earth.

I don't hate apple either, I kinda like some of their stuff. That's what i thought when I first saw it, your view did not come in mind.

Camera built-in with a TV instead of a peripheral for voice commands (Siri) and motion - along with a huge library of apps and entertainment content? Now that is innovating! I haven't seen anybody do that yet. Why use a remote (which you can lose all too often if you have pets or you are clumsy)? Only thing missing now is for Apple to give game developers access to their SDK - which I doubt they will do because the margins in game development is very low. Luckily for Gabe.

I don't hate apple either, I kinda like some of their stuff.

Likewise. I don't own a single piece of Apple product, but I love many of their products because of the design and elegance. I'd love to get into the ecosystem, but it's too expensive for me right now. I will however buy an iPhone for the next phone as Android is garbage for my user experience.

As a side note, for all those guys worried about privacy, it was gone a long time ago. There is a good doc on this subject, buy/download the film called 'Terms and Conditions May Apply'.

Apple copying another existing tech instead of innovating? I'M SHOCKED!
