Bottlenecking .. Crysis 3

Akamii

i was playing Crysis 3 today, it was my first time to play it then i was running sometimes on 60~75FPS .. with drops to 25~35fps.. which i found it weird.. and when the story came to another specific part , my fps was 20~35FPS O.o so i decided to check my cpu/gpu status .. and get what  the GPU clock was dropped down from 965 (which is the maximum) to 770~860 mhz , which means there's a bottleneck so i checked the cpu usage and it was 88~97% the 4 cores were getting the same results.. O_O just how ?!

my cpu is i5 4440 and my gpu is r9 285 oc version

and my game settings "Very high SMAA 2TX " even the resolution is 768p not even 1080 p -_-

OS : Win 8

Driver : 14.3

howcome i5 4440 bottlenecking r9 285 in an offline game? and note that i was playing BF4 without any problems on ultra.

just tell me whats going on guys?! i have to buy another fcking new cpu i7 or even i5 devil's canyon ?!! god i thought i5 4440 wont bottleneck 285 anyhow !

I was having this issue with my 570. Feed it a little more voltage and it won't downclock. It has nothing to do with your CPU unless you're infested with viruses/malware.

CPU: INTEL Core i7 4790k @ 4.7Ghz - Cooling: NZXT Kraken X61 - Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X SLI - RAM: 16GB G.Skill Ares 2400mhz - GPU: AMD Sapphire Nitro R9 Fury 4G - Case: Phanteks P350X - PSU: EVGA 750GQ - Storage: WD Black 1TB - Fans: 2x Noctua NF-P14s (Push) / 2x Corsair AF140 (Pull) / 3x Corsair AF120 (Exhaust) - Keyboard: Corsair K70 Cherry MX Red - Mouse: Razer Deathadder Chroma

Bit of an AMD fan I suppose. I don't bias my replies to anything however, I just prefer AMD and their products. Buy whatever the H*CK you want.

if his CPU is maxed out in Crysis 3 it's probably the CPU's fault as it should not be that. the 4460 is quite a bit over what Crysis 3 needs so it shouldn't be at 100% usage.

Crysis 3 is very demanding on CPUs, it's one of the few games where an i7 is easily preferable to an i5. You shouldn't run Crysis 3 Very High on an i5, try the High system spec instead. On Very High you get all these computationally expensive physics effects like cloth reacting to the wind in the ship stage to begin the game.

85~97% and not stable. im talking about the 4 cores not the total

tried High and it was kinda similiar.. in the opened area i get my fps decreased from 80 to 30~40fps, also the clocks are not stable 920~888mhz. but some areas i get 965mhz stable + 100~80fps, thats on Hight and Textures Res on Very High . AA SMAA X2 , 768p

although i saw a youtube video where he was gaming on 1080p Crysis 3 , High presets + Very High Textures + SMAA X2 , and he was getting stable 58~60fps everywhere, and he is using R9 285 but + i7 ..is just because of that i7 i dont get stable 60fps on 768p but he gets 60fps although he's gaming on 1080p? how come !

Try use advanced settings and reduce the physics rate.

Yeah the grass or advanced physics can bottleneck an i5 which is similar to an i7 w/o HT.

You can tweak the game with CVAR configurator iinm.

You're CPU limited =D. This is one of the instances where an i5 is just not going to cut it on max. I was playing it once and I got to a part where you're in a huge grassy field with the big railgun thing looking for you. Managed to make my CPU hit something like an average of 92% load across all 8 threads (highest being 97% and lowest being 86%), and my GPUs started getting lower utilization. Since Crysis 3 utilizes Hyperthreading, your i5 isn't nearly as good as an i7 for that game. Do what other people here said and look for the CPU intensive settings and turn them down, or buy an i7 or even an overclockable i5 and have at the overclocking.

Fair enough; but if you really don't know it's best to state that you don't know (even though you did sound like you were guessing, in your defense). It's better to say "I don't know" or refrain from a post than to suggest wrong information =D.

You also have to keep in mind an i7 while I own one myself rarely gets as much usage in a majority of gaming titles. Only when it comes to rendering and streaming does it really come in handy.

yes, however... *points to "livestreaming master" in title*

That being said, I do not close all programs and game fullscreen on a single monitor... I usually multitask quite a bit, and the extra CPU power being used can add up and subtract from what a game has to use.

I'm on mobile so it doesn't show up and I mentioned streamibg. That being said we all multitasking and an i5 is still more than enough. Only multi threaded workloads truly take FULL advantage of i7s. Regardless it's a great CPU that can handle a lot just as the i5 can. Not quite as much as a 6 core or 8 core but those are for top tier power users or people with fat wallets.

FULL advantage, sure... but it doesn't mean i7s are no advantage without those programs. If a game doesn't take advantage of hyperthreading on an i7, other programs on your PC can. It does make a difference in games that use i5s near to 100%, like BF4 and GTA V etc if you want to say... run skype calls in the background or whatnot.

Of course it does. I never said it didn't. I think we are just going in a circle of nippicking at this point.

You shouldn't run Crysis 3 Very High on an i5, try the High system spec instead. On Very High you get all these computationally expensive physics effects like cloth reacting to the wind in the ship stage to begin the game.

I run Crysis 3 on Ultra with max AA in 1440p easy. And i have an i5.
