R9 290 High temps

Right, so. I have an xfx R9 290 DD overclocked to about 70 mhz, about equal to the power of a 290x, and it reaches quite high temps. 94 celcius under full gaming to be exact, and idles at 49-50 c. For my cpu cooling, I have a Corsair h110 with two Noctua something somethings (wow, can't believe I forgot the name of one of my parts!, I'll have to look back on pcpartpicker later).

My question is, Should I buy an nzxt kraken g10, aio mounter and use my h110 for my gpu? (I could use the rest of my money to buy a hyper 212 evo for my cpu (I do still have the stock cooler for a while though...)

The only issue i would have with this, is that I really like the look of the DD cooler in my system, and don't know how well a kraken would look in it.

Thanks!

Change thermal paste. I had the same problem with my 290x and changing thermal paste dropped load temps to about 77 from 92c

NZXT says that most aio's are compatible, not just their kraken series. (even linus says it in one of his vids.)

I did. I have some Antec formula 7 on it. (rather than that chalk i had to scrub off). And I am positive that I re-mounted the cooler back correctly.

I also know that the xfx cooler is basically the lowest of the low, and it sucks (but it looks sooo nice.)

The 290's are meant to reach them high temps, dont quote me but i think it was safe till like 95 degrees Celsius, i had the same card and found out after... and didnt like that so i just swapped since i could still return it.

I noticed that while playing gta v, My card throttles a little , or so it seems. I get slight stuttering. It is also pinned at 94 all the time. Except loading screens where it cools down a little. Both fans are running at 100%.

EDIT- temps according to msi afterburner

yh i had the same, i always use to get 94, and what you said earlier about temps around 50, thats exactly what i got whilst idle...

So in short nothing is wrong with your card its just meant to get the hot unfortunately

How is the VRM temps during load? Use GPU-Z to find out

That isnt bad actually

My VRM temps goes up to 90c if i do overvolting

I still think you should double check your GPU cooler's seating

Okay nvm that's horrendous.... You should try underclocking your card tho....

Is your card OCed?

only the gpu, the memory is at it's stock speed of 1250 mhz. Most people wiht the xfx cooler buy cheap small heatsinks and apply them to the vrm because of that. the gpu is clocked to its max at 1050mhz. (1.095 ghz)

I would suggest going with a g10 then.... or better yet the corsair variance of the g10 (hg10 i think) so you wont be affected by the VRM problems!

phhhhh, my budgets $50 including cpu cooler (probs gonna go with hyper 212 evo) I will buy some of those vrm heatsinks and the kraken g10 has a 90mm fan right there so that's nice. I need only save up about $10 more for a cpu cooler (just bought the kraken). Thanks for your help!

you should get the hg10 for like 40 dollars

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181085&cm_re=hg10-_-35-181-085-_-Product

vs kraken g10 for 50$ (newegg is out of stock)

hg10 solves the VRM issue

http://www.overclock.net/t/1525392/corsair-hg10-information-thread-r9-290-x-updated-with-blower-fan-off-temps

And then you can pick up your 212evo with the remaining cash :)

Good luck!
