I would go with an air cooler. Quieter, cheaper, less points of failure. While the 212 EVO is decent, there are often better alternatives for the same or cheaper price.

4.2 should be achievable on 212, but 4.5 dont even try.

Why do you say that?  I'd expect the 212 Evo to be just fine at 4.5GHz.  I have the predecessor 212+ and it's in a system that has to deal with a lot more heat than the 4690K puts out (though I do have it fitted with a Noctua P12 instead of the stock CM fan).

I got 4.6ghz 1.360 vcore on my 6300 using a hyper 212 evo. Max 55 degrees. It does fine on AMD so I assume it will perform better on your cpu. In my opinion h60 isnt that worth it. Get a better watercooler in the future.

Sorry for breaking your reality, but Intel CPUs operate at much higher temps than AMD.

Well good luck then, if youll experience thermal throttling blame yourself.

You could get an h60, use that till you get an h100, then use the h100 on your CPU and h60 on your GPU.

The TDP of an 4690K is 88W.  The TDP of a Phenom II (that I'm running) is 125W.  When overclocked, the difference is even greater.  It's the TDP that matters, not the actual temperature the cores are running at.

He'll be just fine with the 212+.  There are all kinds of people around using the 212 to cool Devil's Canyon CPUs without even the hint of an issue.  Again, what is your basis for saying there would be a problem?

And just to be clear, I'm saying he should be fine if, as he says, he's aiming for a 4.2-4.5GHz overclock.  Obviously if he wants to push higher towards 5GHz he should look for a beefier solution.

Unpopular opinion here. Seidon 120v. I'm using it on my i5 4590k. 70 max and 67 average after 7 hours of stress test when overclocked to 4.5ghz. Cheap and solid.
