Playing Russian version games

All the steam stores on the web, g2a, kinguin, etc, they offer a version much cheaper but with the requirement of it being activated in Russia (or russian ip). I'm curious, if I do this, is it risky? and after it's been activated in their region, do I still need to use a VPN everytime I play the game? or it only for the activation?.

Steam has been known to ban accounts using VPNs. So yes it's risky. If you do it, you have to use the VPN to activate and start the game
