Disk Usage 100% Usage spike during games

Hikaru

Computer Specs:

Intel 4770k

Corsair Vengeance 8x2 GB 1600

Asus VI Hero Motherboard

Two EVGA GTX 760s running in SLI

Crucial M500 240GB SSD

WD Black Dual Drive (1TB HDD and 120GB SSD)

Corsair RM 750

OS: Windows 8 64 Bit

Problem:

I have this problem where occasionally the game will freeze for 2-3 seconds and then return back to normal. Each time the game freezes for 2-3 seconds, I noticed that the disk usage would spike to 100% and then drop right back down. I also noticed that it only occurred in games that are installed in a specific drive. I installed all of my steam games on the 1TB HDD so this issue happens when I play CS:GO. I read somewhere that perhaps the paging might have been the issue so I went ahead and changed the paging memory on my drives to 8GB Min and 16GB Max. That still did not resolve any issues.

Yes I installed windows like any other person would. A clean install. Also my Steam is on my HDD.

this seems like an issue with the WD dual drive. This is why it is always better to have a separate SSD and HDD, not hybrid drives.

the only solution here would be to move steam and your games to the SSD, or replace the dual drive with a regular hard drive

This...

Do you have the most recent firmware from the WD website? These drives were performance nightmares when they first came out.

I am not sure if it is the issue with the WD Drive itself. I installed the games on the SSD of the WD Drive and they work just fine. I am pretty sure it isn't an hadware issue.

try updating any firmware or software it uses

Already tried all of the basic troubleshooting steps. I googled thoroughly before posting this thread.

Do you have another hard drive to test?

I would try installing games on a separate HD to see if the issue comes back.

The fact that the two drives have to share the same HD controller could be an issue for gaming. Especially when loading large worlds.

Are you using the most recent AHCI drivers for your motherboard?

I would be talking to WD about the issue and see if they can help you resolve it, or at least help you RMA it.
