Overclocking issue.

GreenGrizzly

I tried searching before posting, Google isn't loading.
I'm having serious issues overclocking my FX 6300. The highest I ever got stable was 3.990, but that eventually failed. So for now the only one that I can get to stay stable with no issues is 3.85.

My BIOS has an automatic overclocker, but it won't go past 10%, which is the 3.85.

Using an infared thermometer durting bootup at higher speeds it doesn't top 40c, but it crashes when booting into Windows and goes back to the BIOS.
ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 AM3+ MOBO (UEFI BIOS)
AMD FX 6300 Vishera hexa-core 3.5Ghz base clock, 4.0Ghz turbo.
12GB G-Skill Ripjaws 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM
MSI Twin Frozr III GTX 660 core gaming clock 1006Mhz, 1072Mhz core gaming boost clock.
700 watt 80+ bronze Raidmax Cobra PSU

I ran the 3D Mark Skydiver test and the results were a bit odd to me. These were the factory clock benchmarks.

Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Vendor Micro-Star International Co ., Ltd. # of cards 1 SLI / CrossFire Off Memory 2,048 MB Core clock 1,033 MHz Memory bus clock 1,502 MHz Driver name NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Driver version 9.18.13.4752 Driver status FM Approved

Now for the CPU. Processor AMD FX-6300 Reported stock core clock 3,500 MHz Maximum turbo core clock 3,791 MHz Physical / logical processors 1 / 6 # of cores 6 Package AM3+ Manufacturing process 32 nm TDP 95 W

First overclock had the GPU set to 100M hz core boost and 85Mhz memory boost, that wasn't showing in the benchmark. Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Vendor Micro-Star International Co ., Ltd. # of cards 1 SLI / CrossFire Off Memory 2,048 MB Core clock 1,113 MHz Memory bus clock 1,540 MHz Driver name NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Driver version 9.18.13.4752 Driver status FM Approved

The CPU was at 10% OC, that reflected. Processor AMD FX-6300 Reported stock core clock 3,500 MHz Maximum turbo core clock 3,849 MHz Physical / logical processors 1 / 6 # of cores 6 Package AM3+ Manufacturing process 32 nm TDP 95 W

OC #2. 185Mhz core boost 125Mhz memory boost. Again, not refelected. The CPU was the same so I won't bother reposting it. Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Vendor Micro-Star International Co ., Ltd. # of cards 1 SLI / CrossFire Off Memory 2,048 MB Core clock 1,113 MHz Memory bus clock 1,540 MHz Driver name NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Driver version 9.18.13.4752 Driver status FM Approved

Higher clocks, and the framerates dropped.

Does anybody know what might be the issue? I'm thinking the stock cooler might be part of it, it spun the fan up to over 14,000RPM during PayDay2. So I ordered a Freezer 7 for it. AMD wants me to RMA the entire cooler, but I'd rather just use the aftermarket.

I usually do manual overclocks on all of my components(even on the CPU). It turns out better normally. Why are you overclocking the CPU with a stock cooler?

I was using the stock cooler because it was running cooler than people claimed in the reviews. About 9% cooler actually. I'm not trying to push it from 3.5 to 6.0 on stock, just up to 3.9.

The chipset could be overheating and causing throttling issues. This is a common occurrence.

For overclocking FX to gain a REAL benefit, you need a really decent motherboard...with great power delivery, good vrm circuitry and I recommend the 990FX chipset to do so...

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
