Laptop Black Friday Video Editing/Gaming

Posted 18 November 2014 - 06:46 PM

Hi guys, i'm buying a laptop on black friday around $600, and I the main things I plan to do with it are using Premiere Pro and Photoshop for video/photo editing, typing up reports, programming, web browsing, and some gaming.

I would really like a HDD that has over 500gb, and over 8gb of RAM.

So far, I have seen these deals:

 Y40: $670

4.9lbs; 14" 1920x1080; Intel Core i7-4510U ULV 2GHz (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz) Dual-Core HASWELL; 8GB RAM; 500GB HDD + 8GB SSD; 802.11AC + bluetooth; Windows 8; AMD Radeon R9 M275 2GB; 4-cell battery; 1yr warranty

S55: $600

i7-4710HQ,

Which ones would you guys recommend?

My main question, is that which configuration would be better for programming/video editing/ some gaming.

Also, have you guys seen any deals better than this?

i7-4710HQ w/ Integrated Graphics or

 i7-4510u w/ AMD R9 M275 2gb or

Thanks!

Well... The S55 will be much better for video/photo editing but Y40 will be better for gaming . 4710HQ(4 cores, 8 threads) is way more powerful than 4510U(2 cores, 4 threads) but iGPU<R9 M275 so decide which of the tasks is more important to you

CPU: AMD R7 5800x | GPU: XFX 5500XT 4GB | RAM: 2x8GB Kingston Fury Renegade 3600MHz CL16 | Cooling: Deepcool Gammaxx L360 | MB: Aorus B550 Elite V2 | Storage: Samsung 850 Evo 250gb & WD20EAZX | Case: Antec DF700

Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 460: Intel 6200U | 8GB | 256GB SSD | Active pen

ok... One of the concerns I had is that the Y40 has a 1080p screen, but the S55 only has a 1366 by 768 screen.

Other than gaming, would the Y40 beat the S55 at any other tasks?  And would the performance difference between the two be noticable in everyday tasks (like web browsing)?

Well.... For everyday use I would take Y40 because of the 1080p screen. Y40<S55 only at Photo/Video editing....

The only reason to consider the S55 is for the video/photo editing... For all other reasons I would prefer Y40 because it has a better screen and I assume the battery would last longer because 4510U is more power efficient CPU

I don't do much gaming, so that isn't important to me, and battery life isn't too important either...... So you think the S55 would only beat the Y40 while photo/video editing?

Yes the only thing that the S55 would be better for in your case is photo/video editing, since those are tasks that can use as much CPU power as given.

1. Can you replace screen yourself?

2. are you ok with refurbished laptops?

No, I am not able to replace the screen myself. However, I found this deal on a Toshiba refurbished laptop

http://m.toshibadirect.com/product/detail/us/computers/laptops/satellite/S50/BS55T-B5233

It has the i7-4710HQ and a 1080p screen.

But, I was concerned that there would be problems with the laptop that would arise after the 1-month return period is over, since it is refurbished.
