FX-8350 Frequency Fluctuations

So I've been trying to OC my FX-8350, using the guide from ROG: http://rog.asus.com/...-v-formula-z/2/ I'm running stable on P95, but for some reason, I get occasional frequency drops... The last for about 5 seconds each time, and they don't seem to happen in regular intervals. The culprit is that my multiplayer will drop from 24 to 7, stay that way (~1400MHz) for a few seconds, and then clock back up to 24...

I tried messing with some settings (both OC and stock), and no matter the multiplier and buss speed settings, after about 5 minutes of running P95 Small FFT, the downclocking/upclocking starts...

It's seems to last about 15 seconds at a time, and repeats every minute (almost exactly).

Never trust Task Manager numbers, use CPU-Z.

 

It told me my i5 2500K was running at 6.9GHz once.

Windows 8 task manager is a piece of crap that gives incorrect information.

DO NOT use it to monitor your clock speeds, use CPU-Z or some other proper piece of software.

I was using CPU-Z... Taskmanager's graphs just reflected when the clock multiplier would drop over the course of 60 seconds.

I just figured that out! :) Trying to OC from the start again and see what happens...

 

Also my socket was reaching around 80 degrees C, so it might have been throttling a bit too... I guess 4.8GHz was a bit overzealous of me with only an H80i...

Finally got a stable overclock at 4.6GHz! I've been running prime95 for almost two hours now and it seems to be stable at 1.4 volts. No fluctuations so far, hopefully I will pass 3 hours without any issues.

Not a very high overclock, but I'm only running an H80, maybe once I water cool I'll be able to try for a higher clock...

You can leave cool n' quiet on just make sure you set HPC to Enabled and APM to Disabled.

So I've been messing around with my settings, and found that if I OC with the multiplier instead of the Buss Frequency, I can already get to 4.7GHZ (23.5x200) without errors in P95.

The only thing is that the fluctuations are still happening, less often, but still there.

 

My guess now is that the culprit is socket temp. It seems to happen every time that my Socket gets to around 77-78C. It then throttles the multiplier down from 23.5 to 7 for a few seconds, the socket temp drops to around 45C, and then it clocks up again...

 

It's not a huge deal, as it doesn't cause any errors or warnings in P95, but it's still damn annoying...

Maybe dropping the voltage on the CPU will help, as at 1.40V it happened after much longer than at 1.41 or 1.42...

What is your CPU Voltage and your CPU/NB voltage? Dont confuse the two.

What is your CPU Voltage and your CPU/NB voltage? Dont confuse the two.

CPU is now at 1.40625, and NB is at 1.2 or 1.3.

CPU is now at 1.40625, and NB is at 1.2 or 1.3.

 

Take the CPU/NB down to 1.25V and see if it drops the socket temps.

I'm in the UEFI, and my CPU is 1.406250 and my NB is set to 1.200000.

Could it be that I'm not giving enough power to NB?

That asus overclocking guide is not very good. You should never set a massive voltage like that from the beginning. Start to see what your chip is capable of at stock voltage then when it becomes unstable up the voltage in 0.025v increments. Repeat until you hit 1.55v or 62c, whichever comes first. You should also use Hwmonitor for your temps. Some programs like OCCT read the CPU temp from the wrong temp sensor. Look at the package temp under the cpu section. You should also disable all power saving features like C1E, core C6 and APM.

I just used the guide as a reference. I'm now as 4.7GHz (23.5x200) @ 1.406250V.

My problem is that after running P95 for extended periods of time, my multiplier drops from 23.5 to 7 for about 15 seconds...

Voltages are all low so I dont see why the socket is that hot. Try some more airflow or a fan on the back of the socket.

OK, I switched all three of my AP-180's from low to high, and for now, after almost 15 minutes of P95, socket is still only at around 74-75C...

Hopefully that'll do it, and I'll just need to turn the AP's up whenever I stress the CPU.

Shite. Core #6 failed after 45 minutes... Bumped up voltage to 1.4125V and trying again...

No fluctuations with the AP-180's on high though, so that's good...

Getting air behind the motherboard isnt easy but if it prevents throttling then you should be fine. If you do decide to push it further then you can two-side tape a small chipset fan directly to the back of the backplate and it will drop temps quite a bit.
