I need a new mouse! (Wrist Pain) Need Suggestions!

So I have been using a R.A.T. 9 Mouse for 4 years and I am now looking for a new mouse for a new build. Recently I have been experiencing upper arm and wrist pain after gaming sessions. I play in about 3-4 Hour chunks and in total will spend 8-11 hours continuously at my computer every day. I Play fps games using a mix of fingertip and palm, however I use 3 fingers on top while palming for web browsing.  I play at around 1700 DPI and only require a programmable forwards and backwards button and a stepped scroll wheel that can take abuse. As far as laser vs optical, I will be buying a new mat so either is fine as long as they are accurate. I am so used to the thumb and ring/pinky rest featured on the R.A.T. mice that I want something similar. I thought I would post this here to see if anyone has suggestions. I wish to keep it below the $80 mark but if something really suits my needs up to $100 is ok. So far I have looked at the Logitech G502 Proteus, Deathadder, and a R.A.T. 7 + a large bottle of ibuprofen.

Thanks,

RedPanda

I already take breaks, however they include web browsing and youtube sprees. Also I actually need a completely new mouse, it will be for a different rig at a different location.

Get a trackball, for general browsing. It should not hurt your wrist.

I recommend this a lot. I have a Kensington expert trackball ($40 used on eBay) and a DeathAdder. I only connect the DeathAdder for gaming, everything else I use the trackball and it's helped my personal wrist pains.

Wow, I never thought of a trackball. I had always just figured those for video editing and art applications.

I used a logitech track ball for years when not gaming and it wasnt bad. I would recommend a thumb one if you go that route. Since the rest is still like using a normal mouse

I have the same problem when I game for 3+ hours with both mice I have but I think that is becuase I use a finger tip grip so my hand and wrist start killing me seems im no longer ~13 like I was when I started playing cs in 1999

The plan as of now it to get a mouse for gaming and have a trackball of some kind additionally. What mouse for gaming should I go with? I am used to the R.A.T.  9/7 layout, pinky rest, and thumb rest. However, I am tired of the side buttons wearing out on the R.A.T. 9 as I have gone though 3 mice in 5 years. The Logitech g502 looks good, but the scroll wheel looks like it would be hard to get a good grip for mouse and there is no pinky rest.

i dont notice the missing pinky rest, the ergonomics are just so good. The scroll wheel is really massive, but not hard to get good grip -  i never sliped off or anything like that.

What kind of grip do you use? Also can you program the g keys to hold down a button as long as you hold down the g key?

  • 3 weeks later...

I would recommend using speech recognition software like Dragon NaturallySpeaking for non gaming-related work (emails etc). This helped me more than any other keyboard/mouse I had tried.

I had been suffering from repetitive strain injury for about three years. My wrists, my arms and elbows hurt. I couldn’t even lift a cup without pain. Not to mention computer related work/gaming, that was nearly impossible.

July 2006

At the end of a three-month internship I felt a slight pain in my right wrist for the first time. In the following days I continued to work normally, hoping that after the next weekend everything would be okay again - but it was not. Even switching the mouse to my left hand did not help significantly. The pain had intensified within a week and now both wrists were already equally affected. On the weekend both forearms ...

I have published my whole story here My personal RSI experience (Repetitive Strain Injury). You’ll also find comprehensive information on what helped me in the end to overcome this pain (22,000+ words, so arrange enough time ;)). So if you are a fellow sufferer, I hope this can be of help.
