Windows Password Help

I forgot that password on my windows desktop, but they are dells so i am not sure if i can use the boot menu to boot into like a password bypass thing.  Also, I am not sure if they are xp vista 7 or 8 because the person i am trying to help wont send me pictures of the password screens.  THey look like dell dimensions so i am assuming its vista, but im not sure.  so if i could just get options for all of them that would be very helpful.

Thanks

I can help with programming and hardware.

You would need to put your hands on the PC to help him, there is no a recovery help that I know of that you can do away from the PC, unless the notebook is still being supported by Dell.

You can recover it, but you will have to do it yourself (I doubt someone that doesn't even know the OS he has could do it).

What I usually do to "recover" vista/W7 is just using a Windows Install USB drive (DvD also works), get to the repair part, and though console commands modify windows files in order to get in; there is a couple of ways to make it work on this stage, like interchanging the special character program (that one that pops up when you hit shift 6 times) with the User Configuration program (where you change your password). Then once you are in the logging screen, just hit shift 6 times and the user config screen will appear, disable passwords and reboot.

woah woah woah buddy, i don't know the os because she hasn't told me i I am no "noob".  and im not going to use the "i built my own computer" method as proof because linus makes it so easy with his build guides xD, not that i followed them but im just saying.  Anyway, so i can get the install drive for vista, (its a vista pc), so then you are saying i should select the repair option, then what, step by step, do i do.

Thanks

I wasn't calling you noob! But the person over the phone :)

There are a couple ways to recover it I prefer my method but it relies on you exploiting an OS weakness. This way will work with vista too, and it's easier  http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/reset-password-windows-7.htm
