PS Vita vs Nvidia Shield

johnnyTheMac

Hello,

I hope that this is the correct forum for this topic. If not, I apologize in advance.

I am in the market for a portable gaming device. I have a PS4 and a gaming PC that has a graphics card that meet the Nvidia Shield's recommendations. I am stuck between the Vita and Nvidia Shield. I like the fact that the Shield is a great device for emulation, but I remember reading about issues with streaming from your PC. Another thing that I like the Shield for are the controls. I have a bit of a problem with the Vita's controls. I know that the Vita has a pretty big library and the Shield has many Android games.

I am leaning towards the Shield, but I am unsure. Is it a pretty powerful device? Does anyone know about streaming? The Vita works well on outside networks, but I don't know if the Shield does, or if it just works on your in home network.

I would appreciate all advice or information that you can provide. Thank you in advance for all help and suggestions.

johnny

Yeah, that is true.

Do you think that there is a Shield 2 on the way? And, how long do you think that the Shield's hardware will be up to date?

Buy a Shield because the Vita is a sinking ship. Let's put it this way, the current incentive to buying a Vita is 8 games and a 16GB SD card. Sound familiar? That's because this is exactly what the PSPGo did before it officially died. Furthermore, buying a Vita is giving money to $ony and $ony have fucked up a lot recently so why would you give money to them just so you can play a few passable exclusives when you can stream superior PC games on the Shield?!

I wanted the vita to succeed, but it's not. I'd get a shield and a good router and gamestream if you intend to play it from home.

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

Yeah. I just would like to find out if I get it that it will be relevant for a while and how great the gamestreaming is.

I wanted the vita to succeed, but it's not. I'd get a shield and a good router and gamestream if you intend to play it from home.

I think what I really want to do is play it from the couch when my wife and I are watching something together lol. There is only so much of the Bachelor in Paradise one could, and should be expected, to take. I figured that if I could just play while we are in the same room together, that at least counts for being in the same room together. Oh, and before this gets some negative comments, I do like to spend time with my wife...

Like I stated above, I just want to make sure that the streaming works well. I have good equipment in my house, so that shouldn't matter too much on that end. If I can stream in house, that is what I am looking for. If it can stream outside of my network, even better.

I actually had a Vita for about 2 hours. I thought the games were great, I just did not like the controls.

If you like JRPG's or esoteric japanese games (or as TB would put it, anime bullshit) the Vita's for you, if not then steer clear of it.

lol...I am not interested in that, at all. Nothing against those types of games, it is just not my cup of tea. I want to be able to play FPS and games like Black Flag, GTA...etc, from my couch and not in the office.

Had to agree on this one. My avatar is from one though.

I'd recommend the Vita on the grounds that you have an extra library of games and we still get a good selection of goes every so often (And remote play works pretty well). The 3DS is the best bet if you want to get a good standalone portable option.

The Shield is pretty good, but game stream and emulation really sound like your main options there ( Unless there are a number of good games on droid you'd need a controller for).
