I've wondered for a while about this,
How come you see online e-tailers with stock of really old cards like 5870's, gtx285's etc? sometimes with really high prices, sometimes with second hand-ish prices.
Is it staff trying to flog thier old parts, is it refurbs out of manufacturer warrenty or is it literrally stuff thats been found at the back of the warehouse?
im tempted to do a purchase (completing a collection, wallet will hate me later) but I wanna get some piece of mind on what's going on.
any ideas?

"c) All of the above" essentially, better read up on my consumer rights and warranty info, looking at buying an EVGA gtx480 because I think that card is beautiful.

If I do run it for my own amusement I hope to have some sort of safety net if it dies within a month..

I'm pretty sure all things sold in EU are supposed to have 2 year warranty if they are sold as new. Don't know about UK.

That's correct (and applies to the UK, since it's part of the EU). BUT: EU's definition of warranty is quite different to the common sense. In Germany you have 1 year "real warranty", meaning if it dies you just RMA it, but in the second year you actually have to proof that the thing that got defect had something like a production error etc., when you got it. If you can't proof it (which is likely the case - I mean how should you proof it??) the manufacturer is legally allowed to refuse your RMA request.

Thankfully many manufacturers (atleast the good ones) offer manufacturer warranty, beside the legally granted distributor warranty, which normally covers 2 years without this stupid "you have to prove it had an error at arrival" nonsense.
