Hello,

My friend and I just ran some wired networking to his bedroom from the router. After hours in the attic of digging through insulation and cutting holes into drywall, we got everything looking nice and working. Only issue is that the internal network speed auto negotiated to 100mbps. I'm pretty sure this is an issue with the Ethernet cable punch downs not being "punched down" enough. And yes, we used Cat 5e RJ-45 jacks and Riser Cable. Conveniently, his ISP max speed is 100mbps, so do we really need to go through the trouble of figuring out where the issue is? He doesn't do any internal networking of any type either.

My thought process is if he only pays for 100 (and gets 100 - we confirmed through Speedtest.net), then is it an issue?

Thanks!

Zack

98/100 times this is related to poor terminations.

Did you also crimp your own patches?

If you don't have a decent cable tester just redo the most scraggly looking side of the punchdown and try connecting.

If he just uses the internet he might lose a little bit from an overprovision policy on the ISP, but would also need to revisit it when he upgrades his plan.

Yeah, it's just we had screwed everything in nicely and are too lazy to mess with it tonight, lol. I'll have him check into though. Thanks!
