Why is OBS so hungry now

I am not sure what patch cycle, but I recently tried to start streaming again and I cannot stream to twitch and play anything at the same time where using OBS or SLOBS, is there a new setting they've added in the last few months that is bogging machines down?

Maybe you were using GPU encoders like NVENC in the past, but it's now somehow back to x264?

My experience has been the exact opposite. Last year the max x264 preset I could stream at on a Ryzen 1700 was "medium", now I'm able use the "slow" preset for all games without breaking 50% CPU usage. I can use the "slower" preset, but I get dropped frames for some reason even though none of the cores get over 80%.
