Need a good X470 motherboard!

Hey guys, so I started a topic a few weeks ago about building my dream PC. I had decided to go with an I9-9900k, but I've reconsidered and decided to go with AMD as I hope they have something truly crazy with Zen 2. That being said I need a recommendation for a X470 bored as I've never gone AMD. Is Asrock or Aorus a reputable brand? Any recommendations or advice you guys have would be great!! 

 

P.S I'm going 3600 Mghz

the best no compromise x470 board has to be the Asus Rog Crosshair VII Hero(bonus points if you go with the wifi version)

@lmeneses So I'm gonna be going for the Ryzen 2700 and attempting to overclock to 4.3.

 

@ki8aras I've heard bad things about that board. Maybe just the first batch of them were bad?

This man is correct.  Second best would be ASUS ROG Strix.

 

The higher end ASUS boards have built in Performance Enhancers that serve as a XFR/PBO overclock.  Normally PBO will start a workload at a frequency that eventually slows as it continues to work, but the Strix and Crosshair VII boards have settings that will ignore the safety/FIT parameters and the CPU will not downclock while under full load.

This only works with X skus.  So 2700X.

all i know is that a lot of my friends have bought it and they highly recommend it

@ki8aras ah okay then it was probably the first batches of the boards. No new reviews have been posted, since there's no buzz surrounding the product at this point.

 

@nick name I didn't know that. So would you say the extra $70 is worth it to get to the 2700x over the 2700? I figured I'd just overclock to match the 2700x

Asus has become lazy and cheap with their VRM design, they really arent top dog anymore.

any of the boards on this lists you cant go wrong with. 

 

anything that is more than 150$ are top end motherboards. i would personally pic either from ASrock, MSI. the taichi ultimate should have an 6+2 VRM config with doublers. that would be 12 modules for the CPU which is complete overkill

not worth it if you are overclocking. when overclocking it is better you spend the 70$ on a good cooler like the Dark Rock 4 from Bequiet

Best board of course goes to Asus X470 Crosshair 7, but other boards like the Asrock Taichi & professional gaming (basically Taichi in red), Gigabyte Gaming 7 and MSI M7, (and the X370 versions, aside from MSI's XPower) are all great boards for overclocking future processors (as long as AMD doesnt double the core count and you use one of those CPUs).

PBO atm does not do better than manual overclocking, so no spending extra on a CPU for PBO is a bad idea.

@GoldenLag that's what I've heard. Along with poor quality control. For this build I was looking for a 34" 1440p ultrawide and considered the Asus model but everyone is complain about how bad Asus has gotten.

 

I might just go with the Gigabyte offering.

if you mean the Auros gaming 5 it seems to be using either a 4+2 with doubling or a 4+2 without doubling but double the components. it should be plenty for your build. afaik it uses a fake 4+2 double to make it 8+4 config. not as good as a true phasedoubler, but still decent.

Well I wasn't talking about PBO in its native form.  I was talking about how the Strix and Crosshair VII manipulate PBO.  Specifically Performance Enhancer Levels 3 and 4.

If you have heard about ASUS' problems and not Gigabyte's then I would question where you're hearing it.  I've seen folks complain about both.

Yeah, be wary of folks that will try to lead you to believe a particular brand will have higher odds of coming new with a defect.

That's basically PBO with raised power limit, you can do that to most boards that are any good in PBO overclocking anyway (though VRM is a concern, as raising power limit past official specs always are). From what I can see in der8auer's video all Asus' tweaked PBO is raise single core turbo from some 4.3GHz to 4.5GHz, while multicore frequency at 4.25GHz is no better than what you can do on manual overclocks. I havent bothered to test whether I can set single core turbo on a high end AM4 board yet, but I'm sure you can do that to non-X CPUs manually with per core multiplier settings and some refclock tuning.

Off topic, do you guys think Zen 2 will be impressive or a dud? Like I said before I was gonna go with the I9-9900k but really started feeling like Intel doesn't deserve my money. What are your guy's thoughts?

It isn't simply raising the power limit.  You're missing the point where the Performance Enhancer Levels 3 and 4 on the Strix and Crosshair VII ignore the FIT parameters so that the CPU will not downclock.  Regular PBO will hold a speed for a moment and then downclock as thermals increase.  The Performance Enhancer Levels 3 and 4 on the Strix and Crosshair VII do not downclock.

I have pretty high hopes for Zen 2.

with c-states off it should stay at single core max frequency at idle, and all core max frequency under full load across all cores. Though c-states behaviour do vary between brands such as MSI which breaks C-states (i.e. doesnt work at all) when there's manual overclock applied (buildzoid said that's Ryzen"s factory behaviour though)
