Hi everyone!

My current rig is about 4.5 years old and hasn’t been upgraded at all since built. It’s a Core i5 4690K on an Asus Z97-A mobo, 16 GB (4x4gb) G.Skill DDR3-1600, EVGA GTX 780 Ti SC, 1080p, on Windows 7. It’s just a gaming machine, and anything new would be the same. I do very little content creation, if any.

Im debating just building a new PC now that’s got a better upgrade path for the future. What I’m looking at is a Core i7 8700K on a Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Ultra mobo, 16GB (2x8) DDR4-3200, RTX 2080 and moving up to 1440p.

My other option is to upgrade what I have now and stick with 1080p for another year or 2. it is showing its age in the GPU department and either way my PSU is failing and has to be swapped. Maybe a 1070?

Would I be better served holding off a year or two to build a new rig or just build something now and upgrade it later?

Right now the prices for the RTX cards are ridiculous if you don't need ray tracing. I will suggest to upgrade the GPU to something like the GTX 1070 or 1070Ti. The CPU should be good for another year, but after that an upgrade would be reasonable.

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

I would get a second hand 4790k or go ryzen. a second hand 1080 ti is easy to get at the moment and will perform around the same as a 2080 without raytracing. If you're in the us, I saw a deal on a g2 from evga, tier 1 for a really low price. keep your eyes out for deals

Thanks for the responses everyone! Didn’t expect them so quick. In my local area, I found a brand new ASUS Strix 1080 Ti for US$650, based on current Newegg and Amazon prices that seems to be a steal. I’ll have to search more for a 4790K, there are none in my area and on Amazon they are $400+. Would my 4690K be a bottleneck for a 1080 Ti? I probably won’t go that big as I can still get a 1070 Ti or 1080 for half as much but it would be good info to have.
