While playing a game a week ago my computer randomly crashed. As it was late I went to bed and didn't think about it.  A couple days later I went to start my computer again to no avail.  While everything seemed to get power I had no video output.  This setup has been running steady for ~3 years. I have been running the computer with an overclock since I installed the H115i ~2 years ago, mostly it has been at 4.8-4.9 GHz.  It was overclocked using the built in ASUS utility. Any help with this would be appreciated. I'll try to be as detailed as possible below. (PS: I swear I'm not a Corsair Fanboy)

Setup:

CPU: 4790k

Motherboard: Asus Z97-AR

Memory: Patriot G2 DDR3 2x8gb (1333MHZ I think)

Cooler: Corsair H115i

Case: Corsair 600c Inverse ATX

Power Supply: Corsair RM 850 (90% sure thats right)

GPU: MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X 6G

Drives: PNY 460GB SSD

             Samsung 860 EVO 500GB

             2 TB HDD

             3 TB HDD

Monitors: 2x ASUS VG248QE

PCIe Cards: 2 USB expansion cards

Symptoms:

  • Random shutdown
  • Motherboard Boot LED's: Boot Device LED stays red
  • Beep Codes:
    • Without Keyboard: 1 Long, 4 Short, Pause, 1 Short
    • With Keyboard: 1 Short
  • No video output to either monitor
  • Case and cooler fans spin, keyboard and mouse get power
  • No POST screen
  • PSU fan does not spin on startup, not sure if it usually does

Troubleshooting:

So far I have tried just about everything I can think of short of breadboxing because I haven't had a chance to pull out the motherboard and cooler.

  • I have removed everything besides the CPU, Motherboard and PSU. I have tested both sticks of RAM in every slot individually.
  • I have unplugged everything from the USB ports and tried with just the keyboard and/or mouse.
  • I have removed all PCIe cards.
  • I have plugged each monitor into the motherboard directly using both HDMI and DisplayPort.
  • I have reseated the CPU.
  • I have ensured there is no wires shorting anywhere and there is no metal shorting between the motherboard and case.
  • I have unplugged the front panel USB ports. I've tried with and without GPU and still no video output.
  • I've cleared the CMOS several times.
  • I've replaced the CMOS battery.

My Ideas:

My primary suspects right now are motherboard or PSU. I wasn't thinking PSU until tonight when I finally got a motherboard speaker and could listen to the beep codes. I want to get other peoples' opinions before I buy any parts.  If it is the motherboard I'm not even sure where to buy a compatible motherboard anymore that isn't ridiculously expensive. Attached is a random picture of the computer in question because reasons.

Hey bud, your computer is upside down.

So you tried only the Mobo, CPU, and PSU (including no drives)? No RAM should yield a RAM LED. After installing one stick you should get a display LED, then after plugging a display into the integrated graphics, you should get a post/into BIOS. If you fail the first step, you need to try each piece individually. Try swapping out the PSU, MoBo, and CPU one at a time. If you don't have any of those to swap out... you just kind of have to guess (motherboards are probably the most common of the 3 to fail, followed by PSU, with CPU failures being highly highly unlikely). If you get past that and can move onto RAM though, and that's when you should be able to start diagnosing things with more certainty. If one stick works in all slots and one doesn't, it's a bad stick of RAM. If all sticks work in some slots but not others, it's likely the motherboard (my Asus Z370-A actually had a problem where it would run fine with up to 3 sticks installed, but would randomly hang on start up (only sometimes) with all 4 sticks installed, and getting a new motherboard fixed the issue).

It's also possible you have bad wall power. Have you tried plugging it into a different outlet? Possibly one on a different floor, on the other side of the house/building? Are you sure your monitors didn't die? Do you have an extra monitor to try it on? Or possibly a TV? Have you checked the socket for bent pins? I know that one is unlikely since the CPU was installed and not moving for years, but still.

Thanks for all the ideas.  I'll have to test them  Computer identifies as Australian so its rightside up lol.

I tried with no ram and did get the RAM LED.  WIth one and both sticks the RAM LED went out.  Didn't get the RAM LED staying on for any configuration of RAM/slots. Unfortunately after that I only get the Boot_Device_LED staying red.  Don't have any spare parts at the moment but I figure if I run out of things to test without spending money I'll start with getting a new PSU (advice on a good one would be awesome), then Motherboard (where can I get older hardware at a good price), and if I'm still having issues I'll either try a new CPU or just build a new computer when I have the money.

I'll definitely try a different outlet, really wishing I had a nice UPS for clean power. I just moved to a new place a few weeks ago so that is definitely a possibility.  Not certain about the monitors but if they both died at the same time I'll be quite sad.  I'll definitely try testing it on a known good TV.  When I reseated the CPU I did check for bent pins and everything looked fine.

If you have a local used parts place, or even a retailer, they might let you borrow some parts for a couple minutes to test your stuff out. Worth a call before spending a bunch of money troubleshooting.
