GPU Bios

Hello lovely LTT Community ❤️

I wanted to ask and know if i should flash my GPU Bios to a newer version? If so is there a risk to brick my GPU just by flashing to a newer version not custom?

CPU: Ryzen 7 1700X @4GHz   GPU: Asus Rog Strix GTX 1080 A8G

Motherboard: Asus Rog Strix X370-F Gaming   RAM: G.Skill TridenZ 2x8GB 3200MHz CL14

Case: Corsair Obsidian Series 750D   Storages: Samsung 970 Evo 250GB, 250 SanDisk SSD, 2TB Toshiba HDD

CPU Cooler: Corsair H110i 280mm AiO   PSU: Corsair RM750X 750W   Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64Bit

Keyboard: Roccat Vulcan 120   Mouse: Roccat Kova   Headset: HyperX Cloud 2

There really isn't any reason to update a GPU BIOS unless there is some significant improvement over the stock BIOS, like greater voltage control. It isn't like a motherboard BIOS that has more noticeable improvements such as stability or RAM/CPU compatibility features.

I mean how do i know if there are some significant imporvments? On techpowerup i can't see any changelogs :/

That's the thing, there usually aren't any significant improvements, which makes GPU BIOSes way less likely to be changed. The BIOS the manufacturer flashes onto the graphics card is meant to be used on that one specific card, so it's likely to be very stable. If you want real improvements over the stock BIOS, you're going to need to find a custom BIOS somewhere.

Did it on 5 $1k cards. Don’t see the big deal. I did it to get rid of the horrid gpu boost and adjust the clock states correctly. Also raised fan speed, though that isn't a concern anymore.

 

Would do it on my 10 series cards if I could ever figure it out.
