I would try get a 6gen i7 and another 8gb of ram. I dont think you can put a i5 7600 in the same as a i3 6100 i think it needs the 270 chipset.

Z170 will run 7th gen CPUs with a BIOS update.

@DoogleGrand  What's your budget for the upgrade? What are you hoping to do with the system? Gaming? If so, what games and what settings.

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

Yeah get a Z270 board and then the I5. thats what my upgrade path is from my I3-7100. Then you could get a I7-7700K if you wanted but I would go 8th or 9th gen insted of the 7700K.

I'm gonna go find my own tech support...

with BLACKJACK and HOOKERS!

that's the why it should be, is it only Z boards for 170 or can any if they got a update. also Is it 270 to 370 that isn't compatible according to intel then?

all 7th gen Intel CPU's work on all 6th gen mobos, as long as you have an updated BIOS.

8th gen CPU's are not compatible with 6th or 7th gen mobos.
