Upgrading my HP Compaq 6005 Pro

Hi,

I have just recently watched the latest LTT video and come to thoughts of upgrading my HP Compaq 6005 Pro to turn it into a semi decent gaming PC. As I don't have a lot of money to mess around buying the wrong things I have come to the community of LTT to ask for some help. I am ideally looking to upgrade the GPU, CPU and RAM as they're the main goto when creating a gaming pc. I don't want any mistakes with buying things so if you're not completely sure then please say and maybe someone else could give a second opinion. I have wrote down my PC specs below and a link to the website for the PC. If you need any screenshots then please let me know and I'll be glad to supply some screenshots.

Spoiler

Motherboard - Hewlett-Packard 3047h (XU1 PROCESSOR)

CPU - AMD Athlon II X2 B24

GPU - 368MB ATI Radeon HD 4200

RAM - 4.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 531MHz

PSU - Unsure but according to CNET the Nominal Voltage is AC 120/230 V (50/60 Hz)

HDD - 149GB Seagate ST3160815AS

OS - Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

Here is CNET page with the specifications about the PC: https://www.cnet.com/products/hp-compaq-6005-pro-sff-1-10-athlon-2-x2-b24-3-ghz-ram-2-gb-hdd-1-10-160-gb-dvd-supermulti-radeon-hd-4200-gigabit-lan-windows-7-pro/specs/

I am also looking into replacing the HDD with an SSD but I am unsure of how I could put my OS onto the SSD as I do not have the original disc for Windows 10. Recommendations for that are also appreciated. It did originally come with Windows 7 Pro but the previous owner upgraded it to Windows 10 Pro when the update was free to all.

If you need any photos or any further information, don't hesitate to ask!

Thanks in advance,

Ben :)

Honestly, you'd be better off buying a $100 or a $150 refurbished pc that has a 4th gen intel in it, anyone of the dells, hps those type. If you are going to be spending any money at all, that is what I would do. Just because those pc's are just so cheap now. You would be light years ahead on the cpu and just for 100 or 150 bucks. Also note that you get windows 10 already installed and its legit! That pays for itself right there! Then you get everything else for free.

I can't really go out and buy another PC as I just got this one and I'm kinda using my parents money. So I am just looking into upgrading it. I mean, Linus did it so why can't I?

so why can't I?

You can, but the AM3 socket you got doesn't allow for great expandability.

This guy seems to have put in a Phenom II x4 b95 which is about the same as a Q6600.

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/hp-compaq-6005-pro-small-form-factor-processor-upgrade/td-p/5663235

Looks like you can pick a Phenom II x4 up for about 20 USD and a cheap SSD for like 30 USD (Kingston 120gb A400) Or you can go for an Samsung EVO 500gb for 80 USD but that might be out of your price range. You can get your machine up to 16gb RAM but 8gb will be enough. You can get a 1333mhz 2x4gb kit for like 30 or 40 USD on Ebay or Amazon.

The tricky part has to do with a graphics card because your case is SFF.  I would recommend this 1050ti because it does't need any extra power cables and it is a low profile card. Do not go below a 1050 and definitely don't get a 1030 no matter how tempted you are.

The graphics card will be the most expensive component by far.

Here is a video on Windows installation.

You can view your Windows key from your current computer and just key it in when you install the new OS on the SSD.

Let me know if you need more help.

This is extremely helpful and I'll get onto looking at it in the morning and ordering some parts in. What would the order of recommendation be for which part to buy first?

Any chance you could send me a link of where you found that?

I am looking over amazon and ebay and finding them for $50+.

Would I need to buy any extra cables as I would still want to use my Hard Drive as storage for any unused files or previous projects of things that I do to save me from carrying around several USB drives.

That is an extremely expensive GPU. I'll have to save up for a while unless a cheaper one is on the market.

Well, a GPU will help your games be playable, even with a lower end processor you can play some games at least.

You have to look at your power supply to see if it has extra SATA data and power. You can keep your old HDD and then throw the SSD anywhere in the case if you don't have a space for it. Since it's solid state it does not need to be secured.

That RAM is ECC. Not a good choice. Here's an Amazon link: https://www.amazon.com/PC3-10600-DESKTOP-Modules-240-pin-Tech/dp/B00C53A80C/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1541377115&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=8gb+ddr3+1333+desktop&psc=1

Unfortunately the low profile nature of the card / case will make things more expensive. You can look for a cheaper option, but be weary of how low you go on the performance scale.

There are several ways. Google for more information (how to view Windows key). My personal preference is to make a Hiren's boot USB and use 'produkey' to view the Windows key.
