New Gpu or Cpu?

Enxiety

Hello, so i need a little help here, ive been wanting to upgrade my gaming pc for quite sometime and here lately ive gathered money for either a new Gpu or a New motherboard processor and ram, but the thing is im worried that if i buy either one if them it will bottleneck.

Setup:

Gpu: Geforce gtx 970 Stric OC edition

Cpu: I5-4460 3.20GGz 3201Mhz 4 Cores

Motherboard: MSI B85-G43

RAM: HyperX Fury DDR3 1866MHz 16GB

If upgrading Gpu: Geforce gtx 1080 strix standard edition (Bottleneck)

If upgrading Cpu:

Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F GAMING, Socket-AM4

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2400MHz 16GB

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X Processor

PSU: Corsair CX600M Modular

Budget: 700$

Resolution: 1080 by 1920

What im aiming for with this upgrade: Increased FPS

Thanks for the help!

What ? Ryzen 7 isn't for "Just Gaming" its good for professional work while on budget.

A ryzen 5 2600 , 2600X  or an I5 (if you can afford) is good for gaming .

But , if you are talking about gaming + streaming then ryzen 7 is excellent

And I can tell you that Id rather have a Ryzen 7 than a Ryzen 5 for gaming, or an i5.  The OP clearly has a decent budget (see 1080 or this replacement) so I wouldn't future bottleneck myself over cores and threads, since that's the direction of gaming.  4 cores just wont cut it much longer if you want to see the pretties.

why not save up for the money for both?

if you really are impatient then the cpu. you don't want to be spending that kind of money and not getting what you paid out of it or worse.

with just the cpu upgrade you might even see a little bit more out of your gpu. but that cpu is also a little over kill for just gaming don't you think?

its also like 200$ more than an ryzen 5 2600. take the extra 200$ and put it toward the 1080

Around 100 - 150

And im willing to buy a 1080 for the reason that the new gen just came out and instead of buying a 1060 or 1070 ill buy a 1080 so i dont need to upgrade for a long time on the gpu

Someone should tell Ubisoft, Assassins Creed Odyssey CPU usage is absurd.  I'm CPU bottle-necked in cities on an 8600k @ 4.8Ghz.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)

you could get this, the 1070 ti performs almost the same as a 1080, your psu can handle it, you have a 6 core processor for what I think is a great price and 16 gigs of faster memory, which is preffered with ryzen in general. and that for just 40 bucks more

I suggest that you go and search for a used 1080 or 1080ti

there prices are dropping like hell

You can find 1080 ti for around 400$

i would sy to go for a ryzen 5 2600 or 2600x. The GPU will be fine for some time and I would upgrade the cpu since it is imo the weakest of the 2
