Whats the best version of linux?

I suggest you go here http://distrowatch.com/, have a browse using the column on the right, virtualbox is your friend here, and try one you like the look of. The majority of the top ones are all fairly mature with decent support communities. Edit: If you are new to linux distros Ubuntu is a fairly safe start, you may however find one of the others more suitable for what you want in the long run.
