Media Server Operating system

I have a dismissed HP proliant microserver that I wanted to use like a media server for my house where PCs connected to home network can stream videos/photos from. The unit has a valid Windows Server 2008 r2 foundation Key but I can't manage to install It and maybe Windows server isn't even the best option for my use. Which os should I use?

Have you considered FreeNAS with a plex plugin installed?

I'm an absolute noob on this matter, all inputs are welcome. Ideally I'm looking for something free. Could you give me more infos regarding your suggestion?

It's free. It typically runs from a flash drive plugged into the PC, and formats your drives into a ZFS array similar to RAID. ZFS is great for error checking a correction. FreeNAS likes lots of RAM, about 1 GB ram/1TB of storage. FreeNAS has a lot of plugins you can install, it can run VMs. You can set up storage shares and users with tiered access. It's a very powerful NAS OS. I'd recommend watching some videos about it.
