need advice

So i am building a new pc and I tried booting it, and it turned off automatically

 

so I pulled it out of the case, and took out all the non essential components so  am left with

an

i7-7700

8gb ram ( i know it works cause I swapped between the two

550watt psu (swapped it with a spare so same thing, its not the culprit

Rog strix b360-I gaming motherboard

 

I tried reseating everything. but every time I press everything turns on and then quickly turns off, the psu makes a tick tock sound

 

so I am stuck between the motherboard and the cpu. the mobos RGB is still going so isnt that a sign it works and its giving out the cpu post on boot so I presume its the cpu. 

any advice on things I should test? or just send back and get a new one.

 

its just that sending back is expensive

What motherboard do you have

and is that the only possible test, would you recommend changing the cpu or mobo?

Are you sure its the PSU making the ticking noise and not your boot drive?

 

They say power supply is often the culprit so make sure thats connected properly in case of a short. Though if that was the issue before, you might have fried something before disassembly...

i litteraly disconnected the drive so as to check if it was related to that but no its the psu, I hear it quite clearly

Alright, the only thing you can do is watch a build video on youtube and follow that to the letter. If the thing doesnt start then something happened to the PSU or motherboard and one of them if not both could have been damaged somehow/faulty. If you have a spare one or both then great you should try them and see if they work.

man I stated that I got a spare psu, my issue is I am trying to decide if the issue is cpu or the motherboard
