So, I know this sounds dumb but I'm new to pc building and had a question. If i have a motherboard that has a displayport do I use that to connect to the monitor or do I use the displayport on the graphics card ?

You always use the port on the dedicated graphics card. If that's not present in your system or you have display issues with your GPU, you can connect it to the motherboard so the display goes through the integrated GPU for troubleshooting.
