I plug in my laptops charger and it shut down and never turn on

This sounds the most likely, but since you say it is the original charger it leaves me in doubt.
Did the power drop in the house/room you were in?

Has the charger recently taken any damage (Fall, water or another beverage, pets chewing on it, rough use for travel)?

Do you have a picture of the charger and a detailed description of what you did with it since the last time you used it. 

And as samuel said, laptopname and age would be good to know too :)

And turn on the machine.

 

If it turns on you can put back the battery and you're good to go.

@Toynbee if you remove cmos battery be carefull not to break black plastic that hold battery
