Fix my pc please ...

Go to solution Solved by roid,

roid - I'll start the blend test now but I'm pretty sure its not the RAM as I just brought the vengeance RAM. As far as temps go, the GPU temp never exceeds 80, and the CPU stays around 50

Did you transfer the drive with your OS from a different pc setup? If so you might have to do a fresh OS install like TideRower mentioned.

Temps seem normal though, do you have the latest nvidia drivers 331.82? How many sticks of vengeance RAM do you have 1 or 2 and at what frequency and clock speeds?

Hi guys and girls,

I have been having issues with my computer for a couple of months now - what happens is when I run games which use 90%+ gpu utilization, and when I run artificial gpu benchmarks my computer crashes. When It crashes the screen goes black (or occasionally a striped blue colour) and the speakers just buzz loudly.

I first assumed it was my gpu (GTX 770) as it was overclocked - so I RMA'd it and got a new one, but that hasn't fixed the problem.

I underclocked my cpu to make sure that that isn't the issue (I can run prime95 for hours with no crashes)

I updated my audio drivers to the latest ones incase that was the issue

I plugged loads of devices into my pc to increase the draw power as high as I could get it ( I measured using a power meter ) and it didn't crash

- The computer only crashes when running GPU intensive things - however GPU is new ................. any help would be really appreciated - thanks x

Did you do a blend test with prime95? The blend test stress tests your CPU and memory so if you ran that for more than two hours without errors I doubt the problem is with ur CPU, but still could be caused by ur drivers, temps, ram, or gpu. Whats your temps at load?

All ready done - I went into device manager and uninstalled drivers from there and uninstalled all AMD programmes for GPU - is there a chance that there are still some old conflicting drivers left ??

Just went through 'driver turbo' to see all drivers and none of the are for AMD graphics cards.

TideRower -  I would prefer not to reinstall my os - but if no other solutions work then it could be that.

The buzzing sound from the speakers is normal when a PC freezes or crashes. That is just "noise" being caused by the repetition of an electrical action in the motherboard. What you need to check is how is your cooling in your PC, do you have enough intake of cool air and the expulsion of hot air for your ambient. Also, is your GPU have enough cooling.

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

roid - I'll reinstall my os then because I did switch over from a different pc (but that was a year ago and it has been working fine up until a couple months back). Yep I have the latest nvidia drivers, and my ram is two sticks @1866

Ya you'll probably have to do a OS reinstall, but since it's a huge inconvenience you might want to 100% make sure, I'd just test all your components make sure there's no errors in prime95 and also do a memtest86 test on your ram you'll have to burn it on a cd or flash drive and boot it from bios.

edit: use also a gpu benchmark test like evga oc scanner x or furmark to see what your power draw is on your card during full load and if other errors occur. Might want to enable max temp to ~80 too. And try a quick stress test to see if you get a ton of artifacts within a minute.

Hi just a quick update - I am four hours into a mem test and no errors yet. From here I plan to wipe the OS and reinstall. If that doesn't fix it, then I'm going to buy a new PSU and try that to see if that works - if that doesn't work then I'm not sure what after that.

Thanks for the help and I will keep you updated x

Update 2 - I have wiped my main drive and then installed windows 7 instead of windows 8. So far I have run kombuster for an hour and no crashes. I have played trine 2 for a while which usually crashes the computer and nothing. The only other thing I need to do is run Batman Arkham city and see if it crashes then x

Sweet, good to hear its not crashing anymore. Should feel like a brand new pc.
