OOHHHH i didn't mean the 8 pin i meant the extra 4 pin that i have on my mobo (Gigabyte Z87X-OC)

like linus said once, "unless u plan to do crazy liquid nitrogen exotic cooling to 6GHz youll be fine" - Linus

It is MANDATORY or the system won't post.

What the extra 4 pin beside the 8 pin :P

It is not mandatory, system will post

i had a corsair tx 650 v2, died and RMA-ed  3 times, waiting for my store to send me a replacement offer

I now use a 400 watt PS on my 4770k, and it works with ONLY HAVING 4 pin connector for the CPU and i have a gtx 670 plugged in, my tx 650 shuts off when i use all my components to the limit, withouth OC, and this pathetic non 80+ PSU works with 0 issues ( i will still not OC or use max GPU settings in Crysis 3 and similar, but it does work. This is only short term. )

You don't need an 8 pin to power a CPU, you have it for stability, a lot of AMD AM3+ 970 boards do not even have an 8 pin option and they work with overclocked bulldozers, the 8 pin is just there as redundancy, some extra stability for overclocking, the other 4 pin on your motherboard does the same for that extra edge when braking world records and using liquid nitrogen.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING 4 PIN PSU-s ON 8 PIN READY MOBOS !!!! this is just my example and just to clear the misconception about this matter. a warning, if you only plug the 4 pin ATX PSU to an 8pin board, be sure to plug it in the right part of the 8 pin!!

System

CPU: i7 4770kMotherboard: Asus Maximus VI HeroRAM: HyperX KHX318C9SRK4/32 - 32GB DDR3-1866 CL9 / GPU: Gainward Geforce GTX 670 Phantom Case: Cooler Master HAF XBStorage: 1 TB WD BluePSU: Cooler Master V-650sDisplay(s): Dell U2312HM, LG194WT, LG E1941

Cooling: Noctua NH-D15Keyboard: Logitech G710+Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus SpectrumSound: Focusrite 2i4 - USB DAC / OS: Windows 7 (still holding on XD)

He said he is going to do some OCing he will need it or the system won't post. He never said anything about not OCing the GPU or CPU like you have.

we're not talking about the 8-pin. The board he has has a 4 pin AND an 8 pin. You do not need to the extra 4 pin at all. Actually, you can technacally put your 4 pin cable in the 8-pin and the system will still post.

Finally my Santa hat doesn't look out of place

Thought it was the 8-pin he meant. That extra 4-pin is for the PCI and not the CPU as i thought and you are right he can leave that empty and still boot.

I replied to both comments, not just OP-s, yes i know what he wanted, and he still will not need it, it is questionable how will the extra 4 pin help anyway, that is all, i just described my situation...
