Hey guys I heard of SMART and decided it would be a good idea to look at all of my hdd's data, this is given for my 500gb seagate barracuda.

My question is what do I look for in smart data and is the "fail" on the ecc error rate a problem?

So I spelt something wrong in my post... I don't care I don't read through what I write and I type very quickly.

any current value near the threshold is a bad sign when it comes to smart data but thats not true of certain ones like temperature and airflow

Would you therefore suggest I return this hdd?

i would say yes your ECC error rate failed it could be a point in failure if you can wipe it and return it for a new one why not?
