Ok hi, so I’m having this issue with running Ethernet outside my house right now. I’m using 2 CAT 7 cables at about 150 feet it’s going from a fiber based modem up to my third story  nighthawk via a hole in the wall from my basement all the way up the house to the nighthawk modem, when we use the nighthawk downstairs with the factory cable CAT 5e cable we get 450ish sometimes more MBps out of our 1 Gbps total. When we use our CAT 7 cable it drops down to maybe 100 MBps but is highly unstable and fluctuates a lot.

any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated also if I did a terrible job of explaining this then just ask a question and I’ll get right back to you. Thanks

Well CAT 5e is all you need for gigabit. So how are they ran? Outside? Are they UV resistant?

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Are the Cat7 cables from a reputable brand? Cat7 and Cat7A aren't supported by the TIA/EIA so there is no enforcement of standards compliance, not that there is much for Cat 6A and below anyway. What I've seen of Cat7 cable is that it is either legit but more than 50% more expensive than Cat6A, or it is fake and barely passes Cat5 (not 5E) standards (and still costs as much or more than a legit Cat6A cable because they are duping you). Where the cables purchases premade, or cut from a spool and terminated onsite?

Do the link lights on the Nighthawk look the same when using all of the cables? If they are green with the Cat5E but orange/yellow with the Cat7 then that indicates that the Cat7 is only linking at 100Mb speeds.

Finally, please learn the difference between MB (byte) and Mb (bit). Storage uses MB, network speeds (except when reported in Steam) use Mb. See this classic TechQuickie:

Why CAT 7?

Are you sure its even CAT 7?

See people tend to use Cat 6/7 (say that do) and use regular RJ45 jacks at the end which they are not designed to be used with. This first of all makes the cable useless for its standard but without proper termination introduce a ton of noise into the line because of the difficulty to terminate neatly. I can hands down say its the termination.

If it is running outdoors, then a proper outdoor ethernet cable (which means the jacket is UV resistant and sometimes has a gel inside to keep out water) is a must. If you buy a premade cable, or have it professionally installed, then go with Cat 6 or 6A in my opinion, but Cat5e would be fine too. If you’re going to terminate it yourself the go with Cate 5e because its harder to screw up.
