So I've seen a lot and heard a lot of people saying 3000 mhz ram is the sweet spot. Upon checking for a mobo that hits 3000 without oc for ryzen, I found nothing on newegg or amazon. I know they had memory issues at first, but I thought that was long over. Does ryzen not support ram past 2933? That's the highest I could find supported by any mobo, am I missing something?

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.

Ryzen 2nd gen officially supports RAM up to DDR4-2933. Higher speeds are definitely possible, but AMD just doesn't guarantee anything (which is why it's considered overclocking). The same way Intel only guarantees pretty limited memory speeds even though their CPUs can handle more.

given that, though, is it worth it to buy more than 2933?

Probably. I bought a kit of DDR4-3000 and it worked fine with my 2700X. Even if a memory kit can't be run at its full rated speed with a Ryzen chip, the memory will still work at lower clocks, like 2933. And the price premium for DDR4-3000 or 3200 is often minimal so you're not really losing much.

but if you don't get any extra speed, what's the point?

You'll likely get the 3000 or 3200 speed, but even if you don't, 2933 is still faster than a 2800 or 2666 kit that costs almost the same. Also the difference between 3000 and 2933 is negligible.
