RX 580 for 1440p? (mainly to play Overwatch and Fortnite)

JorenBus

Hello all

I'm in the market to buy a new monitor, however I'm not sure if I should make the step towards 1440p.

I have a 4GB RX580 (Nitro+), but I'm not sure if it's smart to buy a 1440p monitor.

I currently mainly play Fortnite and Overwatch, sometimes CS:GO. I realize that these aren't very demanding titles.

Then a follow-up question, will games still look fine if I downscale to 1080p on a 1440p monitor or will the games look like absolute trash?

Thanks

What performance are you currently getting in games? Maybe consider 1440p 144hz or 1080p 144hz

4GB is a *tad* low for 1440 for many games if you want high/ultra settings.  For Fortnite, and CS:Go, I'd say you're fine.  Not sure about Overwatch, never played it.

For your second question, it really depends on the monitor.  Some do great, some don't.

Well I limit my FPS in all my games to 76 anyway, so I don't know haha.

I have considered 1080p 144Hz but since I'm used to IPS, I'm afraid to switch to TN or VA due to the much less nice image :/

for tn i get it, but va is about the same as ips, but with better white levels and worse black levels

Don't be afraid, to spend the extra on an IPS panel or VA since VA is leaning towards the quality of IPS anyways so it doesn't matter if you get IPS or a VA panel. I think you'll have a better experience with 1080p 144h, VA panel because the RX 580 will handle it better, 1440p (144hz) will require you to reduce some settings in game.
