If it physically fit but applied more voltage, you killed your device. You can check the voltage the power brick supplies by reading it. You always want to have the same voltage and equal or greater amperage to the device as is listed on the device.

Even that isn't always safe as some older PSUs were unregulated so if the device didn't pull the rated current, the voltage would rise above its rating.
