Help WIth Adding SSD

Ok so I was looking to add a SSD to my already built PC; I built this a while back and everything is fine but due to extremely slow boot times I was looking to add a ssd. I was wondering how I would go about this; do I just install windows on it and boot from that? I still want all my stuff off of my hard drive clearly. What about the windows on my HDD?  Im hoping there is someone who could help and if so I would be EXTREMELY grateful! Thanks in advance!

Backup the data you want on your HDD then wipe it. Install windows on the SSD then put your stuff back on the HDD

You may install Windows on SSD (disconnect your HDD while install) and keep your HDD with old Windows. You'll have two working operating systems (may be useful). And still you can use your HDD as second drive.

You may clone your HDD system to SSD using Macrium Reflect rescue USB as long as amount of data on your HDD is smaller that your SSD capacity.

 

BUT - if you have extremely slow boot times, then it may be something wrong with your HDD. Check disk for errors (but buy SSD anyway).

ahhh right ok cool. So I presume that I can just install windows onto my SSD, then after plug in my hard drive, and then will my games etc and files be available for access? Im really sorry I sound stupid im pretty nooby with software lol!

You have a few options.

1. If you're not comfortable just wiping everything on your HDD, you can just unplug it temporarily, plug in your SSD, install windows on it, and then after this is done you can plug in your HDD again. However, make sure in your BIOS that you have your system booting from the SSD by default. The HDD will still show up as another drive when you boot up to the SSD and you can copy over whatever files you want directly. You can also just leave them there and navigate through the HDD to find them when you need them.

2. There is software that allows you to clone your HDD to your SSD which basically copies over all the files to the new drive for you, including Windows and essentially does the above step for you. The only downside to this is that it is prone to sometimes having errors that would be prevented by a fresh install of Windows.

3. Do what someone else said and backup your needed files to an external drive or something, then install windows on your SSD and copy them back over.

Yes, they will be available. Depends on how they're installed. If using Origin or Steam, there are tutorials on internet what to do if path changes.

But still - keep your HDD as is, because you probably will need some files (savegames) that you forgot to backup. You may format your HDD anytime you want. Or not.

Mostly because people cloning working operating system using not realiable VSS service (in my opinion). That's why I recommend using rescue USB and clone offline system. And fresh install can go wrong the same way as bad clone. It's always digital copy, so there is no quality of files degradation.

Ahh ok that's cleared some things up guys thanks for your help! Probably gonna get a SSD and maybe another backup drive and then do some more research; there's also someone I know who can help to an extent. Think i'll copy my things over anyways but then probably go the unplug and install windows on ssd then replug in my hdd… route. Sorry for my poor wording!

There is some truth to this statement, but in my experience with lots of fresh installs and clones in different scenarios the fresh installs typically see less errors. It's not uncommon for people to do a fresh install of windows from time to time even if they aren't switching drives.

If you really want to fresh install instead of cloning (which I recommend if doing proper) then just in case set user name the same as in your previous installation. That helps sometimes with some programs and their settings.

Yes, it's not uncommon, but this is worst myth about Windows that existed for years that Windows needs constant reinstalls to work. Do you know any Linux user or Mac user who reinstall his operating system just for fun? Or because "maybe will work better"? No, it's just Windows crappy myth that makes huge number of problems. Read some posts here and every week someone has problem like "I made fresh install and I have problem with...". So - people reinstalls working operating systems because other users says that is necessary and then have problems. I work on many computers (home and work) and my personal record so far is XP installed 12 years ago. 2 motherboards and 3 drives changed from there and everything works without problems. Second place was my win7 (before I switch to win10). 7 years, 3 drives, 3 mainboards. :) My win10 is very young, only 2 years (in december) and 3 drives and only 2 mainboards.

I agree with you. I personally have never had to perform a fresh install on any of my personal systems, although I have seen some odd software gremlins on others' systems that have gone away with a fresh install. Like you said however it can go both ways, and any file transfer is technically prone to errors.

I can agree that some people have great skills to broke everything. And some others are "virus magnets". For me is mostly opportunity to figure out how to save their os and learn something new.
