It could be that the charging port is just worn out, or has been damaged due to excessive pressure at some point (too aggressive charging cord yanks or pulls can cause this) or repeated improper inserted charging cords. Either way the charging port sounds like it's going to need replaced regardless.

How much do you think a repair would cost

Apple treats any other damage that isn't screen damage to iPhones as "other damage", which is basically the cost of replacement for the device. Looking here you can see that the cost via an apple certified repair could be as high as $299, meaning you might be better off just going to your local used electronics store and just buying a replacement phone.

However, the part itself only costs about $35 (the part includes the lightning jack and headphone jack since they are 1 assembly). This means that if you're willing to test your repair skills, you can fix it via this guide from ifixit.

I hoped this helped!

OR depending on your location, third party repair services are likely to be available, and will be much cheaper (even if more than 35 dollars).

But if you haven't tried yet, try a different lightning cord. You might be lucky and the cord instead might be messed up.

But by doing so you are always at Apple's mercy, because who knows what devices they decide to brick next?
