Hello everyone!
I would like to get some recommendations from guys out there who has vast knowledge or experience with wifi networking. So here is my situation.

My family recently moved house and changed our ISP plan. As most of my brothers including me like to game and my Dad like to stream movies a lot, we decided to get a gigabit plan. We are 7 people in total living together at the moment and we all use the internet most of the time. Previously, we were using Ethernet cables to get most out of our previous download speed and also for ping issues. Now, our current landlord doesn't want to see any wires lying around the hallway going to our rooms and for this reason, we can't get the download speed we want from our gigabit plan. On wifi, with only one smartphone or laptop connected as testing device, we only get around 90 Mbps at max on 2.4 Ghz, and about 150Mbps at 5 Ghz. That's just 2 feet away with only 1 device connected from our ISP's main router.
Now, I've been reading reviews about extenders, powerlines, mesh wifi and some high end gaming routers. With so many around, I'm thinking which one is the best for download speed over wifi. Download speed and ping is our first priorities if we decided to buy one. We would want something which can hit atleast around 500-700 Mbps or 900 Mbps if even possible (If there is one). Reviews out there can be tricky as reviewers of particular products give different speed for a particular product. I know they could have different house setup/materials which could affect wifi speeds.
Our house is an old one built around 1990-99 with 3 bedrooms. Walls and doors are all made of wood. Walls are not insulated, only the ceiling and floors are insulated if I'm not mistaken. The house doesn't have other floors (only one floor). The floor plan area is about 136 square meters including garage for 1 car.
We currently have a powerline which can handle up to 200 Mbps but when we tried it from where the router is into my brother's room, we are only getting 14Mbps.
After reading and watching reviews yesterday, I'm currently eyeing the high end routers out there particularly Asus RT-AC88U, Netgear R7000P and X4S D7800 or would you recommend something different/better around this range (or even cheaper choice out there?)?

Thank you so much!
Mikhail

Not so much cheaper but better.

At the high end avoid consumer hardware in my personal experience.

You could get an Edgerouter or Security Gateway and place UAP-AC-PRO's throughout the house. You will need to wire one, after that you can "Mesh" them.

You can get a 5 pack for 600 Euro and  maybe sell the extra ones. Per piece they are roughly 150 Euro.

In my own anecdotal experience i cann tell you i tried to get wifi networks to work correctly with consumer access points and routers.

But it never worked quite as i wanted it.

Now since a year been using Unifi (the UAP's and Amplifi) and never looked back :D

Hi Dujith, oh I never thought of this kind of routers. Very interesting! I think I've seen one of those UAP in my work place. On a gigabit plan, what edgerouter would you recommend? On your internet, what speeds are you getting out of your ISP Plan using wifi?
Thank you! :)

Powerline is only as good as your power wiring usually. Might just go with a simple high-end wifi router and if that isn't good enough get a repeater since you can't drop a wire (so you could run an extra AP) and powerline isn't viable.

Hi PineyCreek,
Yes, thats what we are thinking as the power line could be so old and connections are not so good', it's affecting the speed that much. Maybe even if I buy the most expensive powerline out there, it will be the same. Thank you for your reply! Cheers!

Speeds will depend heavily on how the client will make contact with the AP. For example my phone will only connect up to 200Mbps to a UAP-AC-LR (lite version of the PRO)

But my laptop will happily do 600+ and makes short work of my 200/20 connection at home (it works at full speed) as it has more and larger antennas then the LG phone.

You will never get full use of the Gigabit wireless or powernet as the stated speeds are half duplex. So even a 1300Mbps connection will be 650Mpbs in the best case scenario.

And you have to share that bandwith. So if 1 UAP is used up 50% it can anly give 50% to another user. So either go wired or let the GHz dream go for now ;)
