Hello,

I have around 12-13TB of personal data to be backed up and might go upto 20TB in in 2-3 years. So need storage solution for 20TB data with redundancy. NAS is not required as I can directly connect it to my desktop and I'm mainly looking for cheapest solution possible like RAID5 of 4x6TB (or 8TB drives) SATA drives something like that...  I guess 5400rpm might do as I will mainly use it for backup (or kind of archiving), basically speed is not big requirement here.

Could anyone please suggest few cheap solutions (making sure the redundancy)? Many thanks!!

If you don't care about speed, buy a few of these. https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Expansion-Desktop-External-STEB8000100/dp/B01HAPGEIE/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1538257327&sr=1-4&keywords=8tb+external+hdd

Then take the case off, there normal seagate barracudas inside(normally)

Then plug them into your board, and use software raid. You can normally easily expand later with more.

Thank you for this interesting idea, will look into it. After I setup s/w raid, would I be able to move these drives to another desktop (just in case) with same OS and get data access?

Im assuming your using windows 10(right)

If so just use sotrage spaces. You can move to any other windows 10 or server 2016 system and the drives will work just fine. You can also easily add drives and have multiple raid levels and caching if you want.

Yes I'm using Win10 and looks like "Storage spaces" exactly does what I need.  Thanks again...

There are all kinds of RAID enclosures available with various connection options: eSATA, USB3, Thunderbolt. Look into what's available in that route before stuffing HDDs into your chassis. Mediasonic is one brand I've used in the past without issue, and they have an 8-bay option available for around $230 on NewEgg, or you can go with a 4-bay option. Other brands exist as well, so look around.

My build: Mira - Ryzen 7 3700X, 32GB EVGA DDR4-3200, ASUS Prime X470-PRO, EVGA RTX 3070 XC3, beQuiet Dark Base 900, EVGA 1000 G6
