Got a Thinkpad T420S from a recycle center and was expecting problems, buit this is just confusing. Help?

As the title says, I got a T420S from a local recycle center in the hopes to build it up a bit and replace a T520 I have that has a locked bios. It boots, runs great, for a while. After some time it does a shutdown cycle, turns off, and the sleep light is turned on (the little moon) while its completely turned off. I have reset the bios settings a few times and nothing really has changed. After the forced power off its hard to turn back on. It'll turn on for a second, not post, and just turn back off, but the keyboard light and all indicators flash like it was going to boot normally.

 

Did I waste 80 dollars or is there something I can do about this?

Looks like a mess up power ic.

Well for a 5+ year old laptop, you just cannot expect too much.

I suggest you bring it to a laptop service center to fix / replace the chip.

Any chance you know where I could find schematics?

According to r/Thinkpad I needed to check the TIM.  I found that the CPU cooler WASN'T EVEN ATTACHED.
