I'm refurbing a system for a friend on a limited budget.

If I am reading the online docs correctly it has

1 x PCIe x16
1 x PCIe x1
2 x PCI

PCIe16_1

Would anyone be able to suggest a GPU for this?  I've been looking, and I admit that I am unsure as to what would work.

Hopefully something with an HDMI out?

Thanks for reading.

slap a gtx 1050 in there and you're off to the races

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Graphics cards will use the pcie x16 port. It will be the port closest to the cpu socket.

I agree a gtx 1050 is a good overall recommendation because they have low power consumption and don't usually require any extra power plugs to get up and running. However, not knowing what case, power supply and cpu are being used...then it is really hard to recommend something.

Please provide those details and available budget and then we can give you the best gpu to purchase.

CPU: Ryzen 7 2700x cooled by Pure Rock Slim // RAM: Gskill Flare X 3200mhz CL14 2x16 32GB// GPU: Powercolor Red Devil RX 6650 XT 8GB// Motherboard: ASRock B450m Pro 4 // PSU: Seasonic G550 Gold 80+ // Storage: 4TB pcie nvme game drive, 512 GB m.2 sata3 OS Drive, 4 TB WD Red HDD // Monitor: Samsung S22D300 21.5" 1080p 60Hz, MSI 27" 1080p 144hz Freesync 1ms display // Peripherals:  Logitech fancy shmancy keyboard and moise with rgb and gaminess stuff, very fancy | Kingston HyperX Cloud Core headset

Thank you fasauceome & Spudbilly.

Well, The power supply is a Thermaltake XP550 NP 430w

Believe it or not, I have to go get a Monitor cable, because, well, somehow, I do not have a VGA cable around.   So no idea what the processor is.  I was told that the system is functional. So we shall see.

Thank you both.

Look at the motherboard.  See if there's a model brand and model number.  You can then get a general idea on what processor it might have.

CPU: Sempron 2500+ / P4 2.8E / P4 2.6C / A64 x2 4000+ / E6420 / E8500 / i5-3470 / i7-3770
GPU: TNT2 M64 / Radeon 9000 / MX 440-SE / 7300GT / Radeon 4670 / GTS 250 / Radeon 7950 / 660 Ti

Thanks grss1982.

It's an Asus P5E VM DO rev 1.02g.

Intel® LGA775 Platform
- Intel® Q35 chipset

I do not think that this will be heavily tasked, but, I wanted the system to have something better than the onboard graphics. Help it along a bit.

no matter what is on there, gt 1030 or gtx 750

really a 1050ti is gonna be held back by even the best processors available on that chipset, a gt 1030 also runs on literally anything power wise, just in case your pcie slot is limited to 25w (many older systems are 25w compared to modern pcie x16 slots which are almost always 75w)

Anything from a single core Celeron to at Core 2 Quad Q9000 series.

Boot it up and go to the BIOS, you should see the exact processor. Hopefully a C2D or C2Q. :D

Also what hoes he want to use this for? Gaming only? Non--gaming only? A little bit of both?

Thanks everyone for your input/time.

The processor is a Core 2 E6550 2.33Mhz

I popped my Windows 10 instal usb on and, it loaded and looked like it would have installed.  I was suprised considering its got the original BIOS on it.

I wonder if win10 will be a better option than 7. Cause it is either that or Ubuntu.

This will be used for very light gaming and surfing email etc.

I saw that anyone going for the GT 1030 had best be sure that they get the DDR5 version from what I saw.

You could probably get a used and cheap E8xxx series C2D or a Qxxxx C2D for him to help improve performance a bit. :)

FYI,

I just got a response from ASUS (thanks!) stating that the PCIe16_1 connection can supply up to 75W.

So where does that leave me with a GPU? Back to the 1050 I expect?  Though, the prices for that are higher than my friend was wanting to spend. Hmm.  GPU cost vs pasta for a month.

What does he plan to play with this rig?

Do you have a quality PSU?

I'm assuming you're concerned about the PCIE slot's power because you want a video card that does not require a PCIE connector? Maybe look at used GTX 750 or a GTX 650? GT 1030 would still be a good option but a bit pricey.
