I'm looking to update my old NAS (a WD Mycloud 2TB) and the USB HDD i have lying around into 1 NAS (excluding the backup HDD's)

At the time i did not understand that the Mycloud devices were slow and could not handle high bitrate bluray rips, that was solved sorta with installing OpenMediavault on it.

I have 2 options (or maybe more)

1. Build a cheap PC with a low power CPU to act as an Server which will run Freenas or something like that and double as server for my Ubiquiti network.

2. Get a QNAP, Synology or other brand and also install Ubiquiti controller (as far as i have read up any major brand NAS will run it)

Atm i'm leaning towards option 1 as that will give me the most freedom. But this is mostly based on past experiences where i find the software on brand NAS'es to be slowing it down more then i need it.

Case in point: it will ONLY run as NAS, so no encoding or acting as a media server. Just file storage.

So i'm looking at which CPU will be good for this and or which NAS will fit my needs. Any input is appreciated.

Go for a PC. Much more flexibility, expansion and options and it's really not that much more expensive.

You can get Sandy/Ivy Bridge CPU and motherboard combo (and RAM, normally) used on eBay really cheap now and they'll outperform pretty much any consumer NAS.
