i5-6600K Upgrade for Video Editing

CC268

I've been doing some work on Premiere Pro lately and have decided to do some system upgrades to optimize my desktop for video editing (I originally built this desktop for gaming). I am doing a ton of storage upgrades.

I was originally planning on upgrading my i5-6600K (Skylake) to an i7-7700K (Kaby Lake), however some members on my other post indicated I might be better off upgrading my motherboard and processor to Ryzen. Let me make something clear - I am NOT planning on building a completely new desktop here. Whatever route I take it needs to be compatible with my current components (see my signature).

All that said, I am open to suggestion on motherboards as well as a Ryzen CPU. I'd like to stick with ASUS and something that goes with my current color scheme.

Current build: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/bcnnTW

Thanks.

7700K is a cheaper upgrade than Ryzen.

it will be slightly cheaper, but you might still get a better value out of a ryzen upgrade since you are potentially going from 4/8 to 8/16 threads. It's more expensive from the fact you need a mobo, but the CPU is cheaper so it's not a full mobo's cost more expensive.

Gaming build:

CPU: i7-7700k (5.0ghz, 1.312v)

GPU(s): Asus Strix 1080ti OC (~2063mhz)

Memory: 32GB (4x8) DDR4 G.Skill TridentZ RGB 3000mhz

Motherboard: Asus Prime z270-AR

PSU: Seasonic Prime Titanium 850W

Cooler: Custom water loop (420mm rad + 360mm rad)

Case: Be quiet! Dark base pro 900 (silver)
Primary storage: Samsung 960 evo m.2 SSD (500gb)

Secondary storage: Samsung 850 evo SSD (250gb)

Server build:

OS: Ubuntu server 16.04 LTS (though will probably upgrade to 17.04 for better ryzen support)

CPU: Ryzen R7 1700x

Memory: Ballistix Sport LT 16GB

Motherboard: Asrock B350 m4 pro

PSU: Corsair CX550M

Cooler: Cooler master hyper 212 evo

Storage: 2TB WD Red x1, 128gb OCZ SSD for OS

Case: HAF 932 adv

Yea and I don't mind shelling out some extra cash if it is that big of a benefit. What would be your recommended motherboard (preferably ASUS) for under $200 and which CPU?

Ryzen isnt always faster for video editing.

a 7700K will be fine. Perhaps a used X99 also might suffice.

Thanks for the feedback. I think the i7-7700k will be the best combo of price and ease in terms of upgrading. I just really don't want to go down the road of a new MoBo

As others have recommended, I also recommend just swapping out the cpu with a used 6700K or i7 7700K. Keep in mind, that if you were to upgrade to Ryzen you would most likely have to reinstall your windows installation as well, whilst simply swapping out your current processor for either of the i7s stated above would at most require a bios update. The i7 7700K is about on par with a modern day i5 8600K, so should be plenty for most video editing projects and of course very good at gaming and anything else you'd be doing. Hyper threading makes a much bigger difference today than I think many would like to admit.

Main PC :

CPU = R9 3900X / Motherboard = Asus Crosshair 8 Hero / GPU = EVGA SC Ultra RTX 2060 / RAM = G.Skill 3600 16-19-19-39 ( 32GB / 4x8 ) / Cooling = Dark Rock Pro 4 / Storage = Western Digital Caviar Blue ( X4 ) Crucial 500GB NVME, 500GB 970 EVO/ PSU = Seasonic X-850 Modular / Case = Corsair Carbide 200R

Wireless = Asus PCE-AC56 / Keyboard & Mouse = Corsair K70 MX Blue, Logitech G203 / Headphones = Hyperx Cloud Alpha /
